Third-Person View

The tab button is an extremely useful way for desktop users to navigate UI elements in the world. With Tab bound to free-look, it is impossible to interact with UI elements other than when the head is in the way. ( See also: https://feedback.vrchat.com/third-person-view/p/using-tab-to-navigate-ui-is-not-accurate-in-third-person ) There are some worlds where holding Tab brings up a world menu that fills the screen. This is useful UX in my opinion because the menu can be brought up from anywhere and automatically navigated easily due to the tab-ui-navigation feature. I agree with a suggestion from the discord to switch this to the middle mouse button because it synergizes well with the existing camera controls (move/zoom) and is consistent with the desktop controls for the picture camera.

Audio in the starter stage for third person seems to be based on avatar location and orientation. I'm sure this is a temporary idea, but I'd like to offer my suggestion that I think the best balanced way to implement this in the final version is to keep the audio sounding as it does from the avatar's head, but track the direction based on the camera. I was spinning the avatar around and it was quite silly hearing the audio change as if I was spinning, when my camera was not. I thought maybe attaching the audio listener to the camera position and orientation would make sense at first, but honestly I think that has a higher chance of breaking worlds and immersion if desktop uses can cheat the audio listener location by going into third person like that. I think binding the stereo balance to the camera rotation, while keeping the position locked to the avatar head, is going to result in the smoothest experience across all forms of movement in and out of third person.

Currently impossible to enable Third Person through a Gamepad binding on Steam Deck (using OLED model), so I must enable it through VRChat Settings instead. There should be though! Additionally, the instructions do not show for Gamepad on Steam Deck.

I don't seem to find any way to adjust the Vertical Position of the Third-Person Camera. It would be nice if this can be adjusted in the Settings, mainly because it doesn't feel "right" from where it's anchored to right now. This is just a very particular request as a user who has played hundreds of games that uses Third-Person View. If it DOES exist, instructions need to be more clear.

Using the "<" & ">" keybinds while in Free Rotate, causes the camera to rotate in an unintended way. Ideally, it should mimic the behaviour of using "A" & "D" while in Free Rotate.

It'd be neat to have the option to offset the camera over to the left or right. With the camera behind the head it's possible to hide something or someone behind it.

Allow udon to lock the distance/zoom of the camera via udon (0 being First Person) Allow udon to define a zoom clamp to allow a user to use third person camera, but without exceeding the world creator's desired perspective they design around. Provide an API for controlling the camera in a normalized value (0-1) that would also take into consideration any clamped range that may be enabled. Allow the third person camera to have a translation offset to allow for "over the shoulder" third person perspectives that many games have. Again allow udon to lock such configurations during runtime.

Background: In YTS we have a way to pop the controls out of the wall onto a tablet. This was intended primarily for VR users, but I watch people use it on desktop all the time. While our tablet is usable on desktop without major issues, it's basically mutually incompatible with TPV, since your avatar blocks the ability to see what you're holding (the tablet screen in this case, see attached image). Compounding this issue is the held item's distance adjustment overriding the scroll wheel, so the user is not even able to zoom into FPV to use the tablet unless they drop it and pick it up again afterwards. I would like to have a way to detect if the user is in TPV, so we could gracefully degrade the tablet and any similar pickups.

Experientially - its strange how when closing the quick menu while in third person you see the ui snap to a small size then fadeout. seems to happens irregardless of fov w_2025.4.1-bb6df3d2c3
