[Open Beta] + [Unity 6] Bug when starting VRChat
needs more information
Illucio
Yesterday in Open-Beta and today in Unity 6 Beta the first time I open up and login to VRChat it fails to load and turns black. Once I close the application and reopen VRChat it runs normally. I think there may be a bug or most likely a memory leak issue. After looking at my log, during initial start up I did get:
NullReferenceException after entering my home world at start up.
The world hasn't been updated in some time and has perfectly loaded before. So is this a VRChat-Client Side issue?

Our investigation so far points to a bug in the latest SteamVR Beta. Use the non-beta version of SteamVR to avoid the issue. Unfortunately it doesn't look like something we can fix on our end, but Valve has been made aware of the problem.

Merged in a post:
VRChat soft-lock at launch if SteamVR dashboard is open
Nicalay2
If, while VRChat is launching, the SteamVR dashboard is open, the game will skip the login menu (black screen, very quiet music) and will directly try to load the home but it ill get stuck on "Connecting" until the game is restarted.
It has been happening on quite some VRChat and SteamVR builds, but as of writing this, I use VRChat build 1878 and SteamVR 2.17.6 beta.

Had this on every version of the game for like a month, it seems like it may happen more frequently (but not consistently) if you open the steamvr overlay while loading into the FIRST world of the session (this can be your homeworld or a world that you launched vrchat into directly) it never seems to happen past the first world load.

Same issue here. I’ve been experiencing this problem since the SteamVR 2.17.4 beta. On my device, the problem goes away as soon as I switch back to the stable version of SteamVR. It may be related to the SteamVR beta, so I hope everyone can report it in the SteamVR Bug Reports forum. Here is the link to the thread I created: https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/3/576047946418632921/

ive only had this once and force killing vrchat with the end task right click fixed it seemingly permanently for me, but every boot i get a smaller vrchat window inside the main one with windows vista ui. unsure if related, but i cant see any reports of it
Deantwo
Since Open Beta branch is right now identical to the Live branch, this bug report is not actually Open Beta related.

Deantwo unity 6 is literally in the title
Deantwo
°sky, but if the issue happens on both branches, that implies the issues was there before the Unity-6 beta branch was made, and therefore the issue wasn't introduced as part of the Unity-6 update.
If the issue wasn't introduced in the Unity-6 beta update, the issue isn't related to the Open Beta bug report section, and should instead have been made in the normal Bug Report section.
That is all I am saying here.
But given the timing of the issue, and the fact that it is affecting both versions of the game, it is more likely a server-side issue recently introduced, or a regional ISP issue like we have seen many times before.

We will need a full log if you can consistently reproduce this.

_tau_ Here's a log of the exact same thing happening to me. It happens frequently, enough that getting into VRChat usually requires 4+ launches.

evalka This log does not show any black screen or wait time. You opened the client and fully closed it cleanly after less than 10 seconds?
evalka
_tau_ Odd. I've got quite used to it, I suppose, so I close quickly once it happens. It played the loading screen music without fading in anything for that entire 10 seconds. Possibly an issue with something outside of VRChat?
Y'know, I downgraded off of SteamVR beta recently and have not noticed it since but I haven't been on enough to be sure.

_tau_ I've got a few here, they show it being attributed to some form of DNS issue from what I'm reading? APIs are accessible and working on the same machine, definitely still has this PIP-style startup with the Windows NT fallback UI, and doesn't seem to respond to launch flags. Running Steam/SteamVR Beta.
Killing Steam in Task Manager and starting VRChat manually works properly. Removing steam_api64.dll from the game files in an attempt to "sever" its connection to Steam without having it closed shows no improvement, testing was done with and without it present. It appears it actually cannot (or does not) sign into the servers? I don't get a "logging in as X" UI dialog in either case, it just cuts straight past the downloading phase and starts connecting right away. looks like I got to the one where I tested without the API DLL present, but the one without is gone to the VRChat log automatic deletion ether. All things considered, the behavior is the exact same.
In any case though, it seems that (as of... 15 minutes ago, ish?) it's resolved itself with the new update that hit open beta. Rather or not that's actually the case though might be down to other people's input.
update, again: as of 2:30AM on the 27th, this behavior is still present and may be tied to VR users specifically on all-beta software.

I've been consistently having the problem the past week. Whenever I start the game I usually have to close and open VRChat 3-4 times over until it loads in and works as intended.
Stardox mentioning it the problems sounds similar since I am using SteamVR to VRChat and have close SteamVR completely and on again to try to have VRChat load in at times.
I'll continue looking into it. I'll try to grab my logs when it comes up again.
