Since July 18, 2026, it's not possible to change fallback avatars live.
Steps to reproduce I've attempted:
  1. Have two Good rated private avatars on all platforms.
  2. Use VRChat SDK - Avatars 3.8.2 to set fallback tags on both avatars (or insert some data into avatar tags/categories in later SDK versions to avoid an API error).
  3. Launch VRChat. Have a second client or a friend observe your fallback with "Use Impostor as Fallback" setting disabled - make sure the second user sees your fallback.
  4. Navigate to WubTheCaptain's Rusk (

) by WubTheCaptain on the VRChat Home website. Click "Use as Fallback".
  5. Observe a message appears on the website indicating success, but nothing happens in the VRChat client app - no popup for you, and the other user won't see a change.
  6. Navigate to Rusk (Optimized NonToon) (
    avtr_eea2d29c-b0f1-47a4-9089-9fddffc911af
) by WubTheCaptain on the VRChat Home website. Click "Use as Fallback".
  7. Observe a message appears on the website indicating success, but nothing happens in the VRChat client app - no popup for you, and the other user won't see a change.
Expected result: Fallback avatar changes, you get a popup message in the VRChat client your fallback avatar has been changed.
Actual result: The website gives a popup indicating fallback avatar was changed, but nothing happens in the VRChat client.
Additional info: There was formerly a "Restart to See Your New Fallback Avatar!" message on VRChat Home website on July 23-24, 2026. That message is now gone, but I think it should be added back for now. Only the "Change Into Avatar" button was fixed on July 24th.
