[Items] [Item Request] VRChat Umbrella
MisutaaAsriel
Alongside previous feedback on the items system itself, I figured it'd be nice to put in feedback for some suggested VRChat "official" items. The following is for one of these items:
It's be nice to have a classy, old fashioned, collapsable yellow umbrella [see attached]. I think the idea of having an umbrella which the player can open and shut at will, swing around, etc. would be a cute addition.
It could even be used to demo potential features such as contact senders¹, allowing it when closed to be used as a rod, cane, or staff; or world interactivity, through collisions (e.g. a particle system for rain which destroys particles upon impact with the layer).
The latter would also make it a great tool for testing interactivity with worlds, allowing developers to play with a dynamic, interactive item to see how their worlds respond.
Perhaps it could even slow your fall…

I bet that could be done avatar-based, actually. Especially given that flying avatars basically already have a "slow-falling" effect to them by default.

Ericbazinga the whole point of this request is that:
- You wouldn't need to add this to an avatar and use hacks/workarounds to add the effect, and...
- It'd work with any avatar. No avatar editing required.
Props do not belong on avatars, realistically, with few exceptions. Until such a time that items are UGC, I figured I'd throw in a request or two for some items I'd like to see.
(I already have an umbrella like that on my avatar, but I'd really like to remove it since I'm using a whole second skinned mesh just for the open & close animation...)

MisutaaAsriel Honestly, agreed. Items being separate from avatars would at least hopefully lead to more optimized avatars without all that extra stuff on them. I really hope it'll be a fairly easy port-over from avatars to Items, but from what I've seen and heard so far Items will work way more like world-based props than like avatar props. I'm sure there'll be tools and guides and whatnot on how to do it, though.
I was just saying you could do that right now, which it sounds like you have.
Regarding performance, you could try converting the skinned mesh on your existing umbrella into a regular mesh with a vertex animation, since it's a simple on/off toggle.
