Custom Scalers Smaller than 5cm crash VRChat
complete
SpaceJackalTim
Using custom animation based avatar scalers to scale smaller to 5cm or smaller crashes vrchat now.
- Load avatar with custom scaler that goes smaller than 5cm.
- switch to that size.
- Use the OSC trick to reload avatar.
- Vrchat crashes

After some more testing it is definitely world related and has to do with the near clip camera. it only seems to happen in worlds that have a very large default render distance. For example spaceship hangout. It seems to be related to this issue potentially https://vrchat.canny.io/open-beta/p/1311-forced-near-clip-crashes-in-certain-worlds

SpaceJackalTim: In that case, isn't this a consequence of the user clicking past the Forced Near Clip warning? 🤔
SpaceJackalTim
Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: that is true, but this didnt use to happen before

SpaceJackalTim: Ahh, okay. That's important to note!

QM, and action menu interaction can get wonky at low scales in my experience, but I have not experienced any crashes previously. For the quick menu interaction, there was no way to fix that in older builds. For the action menu; you could set the near clip plane in the main menu to prevent it from disappearing.
But some updates ago there were some UI interaction improvements and I have not tried scaling that small since. Its possible that situation has gotten better.

Please post an example avatar ID! Without an example avatar ID, it is MUCH harder for us to test and reproduce this issue.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: Im not sure what is different. I was preparing a public avatar, but i couldnt get it to crash anymore. I guess a good thing. I tried desktop, half body and full body. Empty instance or instance with friends. But nothing seemed to cause the crash anymore. Ill test more tomorrow as its late for me

SpaceJackalTim: Wait, but tons of people upvoted this. 🤔
... Are people upvoting bugs without confirming themselves first??
Anyhow, I'll leave this open, but unless we can repro this likely won't get much attention.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: I can confirm that 5cm is around where the QM starts being a bit wonky from prior experimentation with custom scaling (unsure if changing the nearclip setting has any effect on this, probably does) and so perhaps that factors into the equation somehow.
I wish I had a public avatar ID that went that small to help with reproduction, but I do not. I thiiiiiink I have the cherub bot package downloaded somewhere so I might upload a version of that with scaling for y'all to test. If it would help you, I can also just send you a custom scaling system with some very extreme minimums and maximums so you can throw something up for testing this yourself.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: it appears to be a weird inconsistant issue, but ive been able to get it to crash a couple times. Ive noticed that it might have to do with forced near clip in certain worlds. Without enabling forced near clip it doesnt seem to crash.
