[2018.2.3] [FEEDBACK] VRChat Status
complete
Pan Diman
As far as I know, users reported that status icons are too big and they look kind of "aggressive" (actually, maybe that's not the right word, but they're just uncomfortable to look at, even though it's just Beta and things like that should be expected). Instead, I suggested using border colors, like on Steam. On the first image below you should be able to see a few examples I made for statuses I'd call "Online", "Idle" (or "Away", but not "AFK"), "Do Not Disturb", "Streaming", and "Join Me", most of which are based on similar options on Discord. Also, while I was coming up with alternatives, my first thought was about the background color, so that's another option as well.

This has been partially addressed as of Build 610.

The entire UI is going to get a makeover in the near future so don't want to spend much time noodling on art. For me (and the team) the menu UI is still pretty temporary. For the moment it was a case of put in a quick colored dot or don't get the user status feature in. We're aware of color blindness issues and will run the final colors through a colorblind test to check 'em. There's logistics reasons why they might not make it to be icons at this point. The UI scene is locked for a release. See what we can do but might be dots for this release and updated in a next one. Def thanks for all the detailed feedback. It is always welcomed and helpful.

This is great news, hope you get more time in the future to update the UI elements better.
Will be following this later down the road :)

We're swapping around the colors a bit. The border idea is good, we plan on revisiting that in the future. For now the light-blue color is "JOIN ME", and green is "ACTIVE"-- the default state.
Busy (red) and Offline (gray) has also been dulled out a bit to make it more clear that they don't want you to join (or you can't join on them, because.. well, they're offline )
This may change slightly before Beta goes to Live, and of course is subject to further change in the future. Keep in mind our UI is far from final.

Thanks for the detailed feedback! This is a good design and prompted some good internal discussion. For now we'll be rolling with the current dots, but we'll definitely be looking back at this in the near future when we get some time. We might also look at changing up the colors for this, as well as other UI elements to bring them in-line with a standard.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: That's kind of disappointing, does that mean the dots are going to be pushed to live no matter what and then months in the future they might update it to make it look like this?

Frustrated VRChat Player: It means that we looked at the idea, liked it, but there's other bug fixes we are prioritizing that are higher priority. Looking at the colors for the User Status also prompted some discussion on other UI color choices, which may mean deeper design choices/changes that require more of a time investment.
In short, this is a Good Idea, and we'll probably act on it in the future-- but not at this very moment.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: Fair enough, although I do hope you guys at least change the colors before it leaves beta. Yellow is a weird choice to have as the default, and as some others pointed out that I also agree with, the yellow and green can be a little too similar looking in color.

I've posted this feedback internally. Thanks for your input!

The icons seem temporary to me. The benefit of icons is they can have unique shapes to help color-blind users. (But that is a potential future benefit.)
As a not-color blind user, I really like these options presented here.

This looks so much better than the dots.

Would be good to add the customization in a config file if possible, i guess many people have different approaches to the coloring.
But having it as Yellow at default would be strange, could use the light Blue color as the whole menu is using that color scheme as default and Green/Red as the other statuses, to strongly indicate something different.

Shelfen: Yeah, that's the only important issue some would have with this system, some people may have issues with color recognition, and I know at least one VRC staff member who's colorblind, but in that case it would require more testing, as always.
bote
Definitely a much better choice design-wise.
