[1878] Remove *nameplate* decorations entirely.
S a c r e d
Nameplate decorations create too much visual noise, and make it harder to read text on nameplates. I play with nameplates off most of the time because I find them to be too distracting and ruin the immersion. When I bring up nameplates using the quick menu, it's because I want to be able to read information as quickly as possible, i.e usernames, statues, group banners. Nameplate decorations make this harder, as I now need to visually separate the text from the now differently colored backgrounds.
Profile decorations are already obnoxious on discord, but at the very least they are only visible when you look at someone's profile. I think that as long as VRC keeps profile decorations to user's profile pages, I'm okay with it. Putting it on nameplates takes it too far.

I can't edit this post, but I'd like to elaborate a little more on my stance regarding this issue:
I understand VRChat is a business, and that they need to make money. I can tell that many of the ideas brought forth for this UI redesign are ideas from Discord. It's clear that profile decorations are profitable for Discord, so I understand why VRChat thinks it's a good idea. They have employees to pay and servers costs after all.
I am not completely against the idea of profile decorations, I think that as long as I am not forced to look at it
all the time
while in game, it's totally fine - i.e, if it's contained in people's personal profiles that I have to click on to see. Where it starts to cross a line for me is how it's visible on nameplates, and to an extent, in the list of users in an instance. It breaks up an otherwise pretty clean and consistent aesthetic. It adds visual noise and clutter, and I personally think it's just simply ugly. The current "reference cube" designs are not
too
obnoxious, but I fear that it might be a slippery slope to way more obnoxious and flashy decorations. I think the main problem for me is the colors. The decorations changing the color of the entire nameplates is a really big change. If it was more akin to some of the main menu themes, where you have different designs/patterns but with the same color scheme, it wouldn't be as problematic.
I feel like if there was a time to take a step back and reconsider these decorations, it's
now
, before more dev time is invested in creating more nameplate decorations.Ridik_Ulass
nothing to add, agree. backwards step in functionality.

Even though I'm not a fan of the profile, especially name decoration at all, I think allowing users to decorate their profile is a nice thing, they look great. Though, I hope there will be an option to turn it off and to default it back to Original gray neutral colors locally, we shouldn't be forced to look at it, imo.

i think giving players the option to turn them off is a good middle ground.

This is how I use the nameplates too. I like turning them on to see whose around within a crowd of 30-40 people. I just need a name and yellow text to tell me if I've added them in the past like we currently have it. I hope our current plates can remain accessible going forward.

Especially for users like me that have them enabled at all times... if I would see these decorations only when opening the menu I would not care much, but seeing 60 spinning animating weird objects at all times on everyone is just obnoxious

A good middle ground for this might be opacity zero name plates (once they have the group banner fixed) as they pretty much do this, they show only the text and pfp:

Zеkk This may fix the nameplate decoration issue, but creates a new problem - now world elements can make the text unreadable.

If not removed entirely then a setting to disable them locally perhaps.
