[1878] Group Banners are useless with the new nameplates. Standardize group banner dimensions.

This is a bug report and a feature request. The new nameplate system completely trashes group banners, which didn't have a great standard (or any standard, for that matter), to begin with.
Currently, on live, a (mostly) consistent group banner means uploading a mostly transparent picture with the actual banner in the middle. This is wasting tons of space that could be actually used to show other art or graphics on the group page.
The image scales very poorly on some parts of the site, as well.
- Our uploaded group banner is 2000x1126, following this unofficialguide: https://www.reddit.com/r/VRchat/comments/10e11hb/groups_banner_guide/
- The main group page shows the original 2000x1126.
- A group event page with no custom thumbnail 1024x576
- The groups landing page scales the image to 256x144. This is extremely bad if you have made a banner with transparency, as per above.
- I'm sure there are many more exposed within the client itself and maybe other parts of the website. But I think this is a good demonstration of how wildly inconsistent this group feature is.
And now on beta with the new nameplate, we see just a few pixels of the group banner. This is effectively useless now for representing a visual of your group. I've attached a picture showing some of these inconsistencies.

Hi all!
Group banners on the new nameplate are getting a pass. We're making the crop position predictable rather than what it does today, and including a way for it to anchor predictably against the top of the nameplate. It will anchor consistently and match against the collapsed nameplate to the expanded/QM version so you aren't designing against two different windows at once.
We'll publish documentation on how the banner gets positioned and cropped so you can actually design around it instead of guessing. This will include an official template image you can work off of! I'm attaching our current draft copy of the template. Don't use this yet, it isn't ready, but it'll give you an idea of what it will look like.
Separately, we're looking at a nameplate-specific banner upload so one image doesn't have to work everywhere. More details on that to come.
Finally, this isn't looking like it'll be backwards-compatible with the previous group banner images. However, I don't think anyone's going to be _too_ torn up about that, since the trade is that, going forward, we'll have predictable behavior for these images.

the newest beta that rolled out today... The banner size is great. Thank you for listening to that feedback. Overall it's small improvements. Personally, the new super transparent design still doesn't speak to me, and I'm still annoyed at the fact icons and other elements of the UI cover up the banner when the hand menu is open, but thanks for listening. The new cropping tool also looks very promising!

MissingNO123
No backwards compatibility is a bit disappointing considering how many group banners were made by those who no longer log on, are taking a break, died, are too lazy to make a new banner, lost the files, had vrc+ lapse, etc. and are all now defunct

MissingNO123: Heard! We tried our best to find a format that would be backwards-compatible, but every time we restricted ourselves in that way, we had to make major compromises in our new standard.
We prefer having a new system that works well, period. We know that's a pain in the butt for the cases you've described, but we'd rather have a better new system that requires reuploads than a compromised system that'll still be carrying some disadvantages due to backwards compatibility a year from now.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community Having a new system is absolutely preferred for consistency. I would say that the ideal solution would be to implement separate images for the Nameplate Banner and the Group Banner, this way it would be a lot simpler for users to control what is being displayed in each location instead of forcing the Group Banner to serve the dual purpose.
If the nameplate and group banners are individual there could be a simple backwards compatible path of creating assets from existing group banners by creating a cropped version to then use inside of the new nameplate banners.
Backwards compatible and simpler going forward. It would also be ideal if there was a "preview" of sorts that allows users to see what nameplate banners would look like on various name lengths.

Seriously, thank you so much for working on this! Predictable banner positioning will be a huge improvement.
I am curious what the main issue with the current system was: was it mostly the lack of documentation, or do the collapsed, expanded, and quick-menued versions actually use different crop regions? It would be helpful to understand exactly what the new system changes.
Alongside the documentation, an in-site preview for each nameplate state and different name lengths would be very useful. Testing in painting software or asking friends to check the result adds unnecessary friction.
I also agree with puppy sky’s suggestion: separate Group Banner and Nameplate Banner slots, with an automatically cropped version of the existing banner as an initial fallback.
Finally, if the nameplate gets its own image, perhaps it no longer needs to be a 16:9 image designed around recropping. A clear upload UI showing the actual aspect ratio, safe area, and final preview would be ideal.

Totally agree with the the chosen path forward here - but not addressed here is the issue with groups that will now be broken and not able to be updated without their owners paying for VRC+. Will there be a method for these users to fix this without paying?

Good news!!
From the 1880 patch notes:An Additional Note about Group Nameplates
We've heard your feedback regarding the Group Nameplate and we are working on adding an additional upload slot to the group management system for them.
We will improve our nameplate image cropping behavior to be more consistent and will include the template in this upload flow so you can be sure that your nameplate looks exactly like you'd like.
This is not in this patch, but given that it's been a major feedback item, we wanted you to know we're on it.
I appreciate everyone who came by to consider, upvote, comment, and make your voice heard.
Also for your consideration: your group members may be allowed to open group
public
instances without your permission: https://feedback.vrchat.com/bug-reports/p/missing-permissions-check-on-group-public-instance-creation-part-2PowerNæp
Adding to this:
Shipping a redesign this huge with zero backwards compatibility hurts. Every group banner in existence was built against the old (already unofficial) constraints, and they all broke at once with no heads up. I have a strong feeling that this was a known risk. That's a lot of collective work invalidated overnight, and it's the kind of thing you plan around before you push, even to a beta. Like, in one of those developer updates perhaps?
The bigger problem is process. In 2026 there's no excuse for shipping a banner system with no standardized resolution, no upload preview, and no official template. YouTube for instance has done the crop-and-preview thing for years. A defined safe area, an on-upload preview that shows exactly what gets cropped per layout, and published dimensions you can design against. Their channel branding docs lay the whole thing out: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10456525
A live preview when uploading a banner, showing the safe zone and where it clips on the closed nameplate versus the open menu, would mitigate most of the complaints in this thread on its own. Right now everyone is reverse engineering the crop from screenshots.

Oh, i need take a look in this problem. I see many nameplates in 7 years. But i kinda agreed the nameplates are kinda big for me. Put many inside nameplate makes it even more bigger. Really. Group banner must more visible imho.
Will come back with my detailed reaction.
MrDummy_NL
After observing nameplates, i agreed the new design is really bad because it still blocks the part of it. So VrChat devs must adjust it to ensure banners are less blocked when observed (with menu open).
anxiouspanda
is a further redesign planned, or did we just get the yellow friends names back and you guys are going to call it a day? Because the nameplates still look awful.
tl;dr I'm saying this out of genuine concern because if the nameplates go live in the current state the community will eat you alive. Nobody likes the change.
Illucio
This was one of the first things I noticed in the Beta.
Either establish the new standard sizes showing people where the cut offs are to design around. Or fit the existing dimensions in the banner that works with all nameplate sizes from small to big.
