[1833] Custom Avatar Scalers Broken
closed
SpaceJackalTim
Custom avatar scalers like the Jackal Scaling System or Mags Scale Adjuster have been broken by the latest beta update. Before the update you could use these to select a custom size multiplier and then reload your avatar to be set to that scale. Usually this would be done by toggling OSC off and on, but just switching out and back into the avatar would usually also work. I have provided a public avatar with the Jackal Scaling System for testing.
Steps to reproduce:
- Use avatar with custom scaler.
- Select any custom size (for example 5x)
- Reload avatar (either toggle OSC off and back on, or switch away and back to the avatar)
- Notice how in the beta your eye height did not change but your body has. Whereas on live the scaler is working fully as intended.
This seems to be caused by a change in how the TPose animator is loaded or handled in the latest beta update.

Unfortunately -- and I know this is going to be a pain -- this is a "Won't Fix" for us.
The reason is that these custom scalers use methods we have never supported.
The creators who make these custom scalers know this, and warn buyers on their store pages:
> The scaler uses a workaround to bypass VRChat's restrictions. I can not guarantee that the scaler won't be broken by a future VRChat update.
The creator is correct, and the cited "future VRChat update" is, unfortunately, this one.
If we were to address this issue:
- It would mean we're now supporting something new, a thing which we have explicitly stated previously that we do notsupport.
- It would require us to revert changes meant to improve or fix other parts of VRChat that we dosupport.
- It would require an unknown amount of time from our team to fix this instance of the issue, and even more time to continue to support these currently-unsupported systems.
Unfortunately, we are not willing to make those compromises, so this issue will be closed with a reason of "Will Not Fix."
Again, we know this may be frustrating to see, and we appreciate the feedback that you all are giving us either way. It gives us a good indication of how we might improve Avatar Scaling in the future.

I hope the VRC devs will consider adding more support for scaling avatars, and ways to configure scaling. I used to be a subscriber, I'd consider doing so again if there were better support.

Well, this is majorly disappointing. Good enough of a reason for me to never buy vrc+ again.

Extremely stupid and dumb. Can't even bother arguing with the PR BS from Tupper, pretending like the limits on in-built scaling aren't entirely arbitrary on a whim.

Updates made me bad… I cannot endure such a roundabout way… My heart misses old version.

Breaking scalers would not be an issue if users were granted a wider range of sizes to scale to. As it is right now it's incredibly limited hence why we even have these tools in the first place.
I find it disheartening that the initial response to user disgruntlement is something along the lines of "it can't be helped." I believe tunnel visioning on change while negatively impacting users in this way is the sunk cost fallacy at its finest, and unfortunately all too common in the gaming industry today.
"It would mean we're now supporting something new, a thing which we have explicitly stated previously that we do not support."
To change what you support in this case would be to respond positively to feedback. To keep customers who not only pay monthly for your game happy, but especially those who care for the game enough to also pay for external accessories that shore up the areas where the game hasn't satisfied user's demand.

Please reconsider.

You guys need to reconsider this. I totally understand you wanna play safe with scales but some people like us need our avis to get up to 1000m

I'll keep this as simple as possible...I joined VRChat exclusively because of scaling, VR is the closest I'll ever have to experience shrinking or being tiny. No scaling, No VRChat. I'd hate to leave because for now this is the easiest VR site for me, especially being mainly a Quest only user, but that's how things are. Have a good one y'all.

this sucks so bad, just uncap the default and/or let world designers impose a limit

The number of posts on a thread marked as "closed" ought to be something of note for any community liaison.
It is understandable the devs need to close up any lingering bugs or issues in the platform that might cause 3rd party gray area things to work working.
However, that does not address at all where the issue would be simply allowing world creators to set their own cap at maximum avatar size.
That would at least be a collaborative stopgap and a nice gesture to a community I know for a factor has moved quite a few headsets and VRC+ subscriptions.
