[1748]can not hear anyone's voice in steam open-beta version VRChat
needs more information
oooooohmygosh
I was using open beta version on Steam, and suddenly I couldn't hear any players' voice. I could still hear the world's music. I tried restart my PC and restart the game, but it still didn't work.

Workaround for those with this same issue as me, try disabling Bluetooth before launching the game, if the game launches with all audio working fine, then reenable bluetooth headset. You may need to go to your audio settings and change the HSP/HFP codec CVSD and mSBC back and forth a bit for it to work. Alternatively, do not use open-beta.

Here are some logs.
Open Beta (no user voice; yes video audio and UI audio)
Not Beta of the exact same instance (everything works perfectly)
> Also, have you tried moving the Voice volume slider, and also individual people's volume sliders (in the Quick Menu)?
I have actually! Nothing happened unfortunately...
I literally cannot reproduce that one moment when the audio
was
working; it seems that open beta just gives me no user voice at all...._

川音リオ@KawaneRio So is this something that happens every time you launch open-beta? As in, you cannot use it at all?
Also, are you using Linux? From the logs it looks like you are, can you provide some details, i.e. which distro and proton runtime version you use?
I do want to fix this, but the logs don't really show anything. If you are willing to help test, I can put up a test build with some extra logging to try. It would also help a lot if you could provide a video of this occuring start to finish.

I am indeed using Kubuntu.
I was on GE-Proton10-20-rtsp17 and updated to GE-Proton10-20-rtsp19 before when the issue persisted.
However... I have tried everything, but it seems that I cannot replicate the issue again on open beta; all the audio just works fine now.
I am removing my vote form this issue.
I apologize for taking your time.

Hey tau, just letting you know that this audio issue is back, and not only it was back but I was able to replicate the issue 100% by connecting/disconnecting my Bluetooth headset before the game launched. In other words, if I don't have any Bluetooth devices connected before VRChat launches, I can hear everyone fine; but if I have my Bluetooth headset connected before VRChat launches, I get no audio from other players in the game (but I can hear the world BGM and UI SFX just fine). ......I don't know if my Bluetooth device has anything to do with other player's voice though... could this be a pure coincidence?
Anyways, I was able to capture all of this in video right here https://youtu.be/_Kp8RfoPgPA . I also have gathered the VRChat log files from my last five sessions; the video captures the last four sessions (corresponding to 1....txt ~ 4.....txt in the output_logs); see time in the top right corner when the game launches

Here is the video captured: https://youtu.be/_Kp8RfoPgPA

川音リオ@KawaneRio: Do you know the exact name of your bluetooth device? Given it only affects voice, I would assume it has to do with spatialization, i.e. if the device is set to Mono or Stereo output. I tried reproducing this with a Mono audio device via Bluetooth on Windows but was unable to.

The bluetooth audio device I am using is called
A19

bluetoothctl info 97:5F:2C:13:D1:5D
output:Here is my audio card information for A19:

Note that I am currently not on open-beta and all the audio works fine right now just like this.
Image attached is my Audio settings on my KDE Plasma Desktop. Both the output and input profiles are set to
Headset Head Unit HSP/HFP, mSBC

And here is my audio information with the VRChat client running on open-beta (no player voice)

川音リオ@KawaneRio: Okay, 2 more questions:
- Looking at the headset, it seems it only has a speaker on one ear, so it's definitely Mono right? Is it configured to be a Mono device in pulseaudio/pipewire too? What happens when you play a "Stereo Test" video on youtube, etc. (especially while VRChat is open)?
- I know this one's a tall order, but would you be able to try this specific device on a Windows machine with the open-beta branch too?

> definitely Mono right?
Correct. This is a mono device.
> Is it configured to be a Mono device in pulseaudio/pipewire too?
It is usually configured to be a mono device (Headset Head Unit: HSP/HFP, codec mSBC) indeed when I play VRChat.
It can also be configured as a stereo device (A2DP Sink, codec SBC) as well. Even when configured as a stereo device, I can hear both Left and Right sounds from my headset.
> What happens when you play a "Stereo Test" video on youtube, etc. (especially while VRChat is open)?
To my surprise, I can hear both sounds of the stereo test with my mono headset (This means that something (likely pipewire) is mixing Left and Right audio sources and outputting it to my mono headset).
Tested while VRChat open-beta was running in the background. Sounds from the YouTube videos (both in game and in browser outside game) works just fine.
川音リオ@KawaneRio
As for the Windows... I do need to debrick and reconfigure my secondary laptop for that and install vrchat for the testing... hopefully someone else with the same problem as me but on windows could test it out... if not I'll do it in the future soon...

Does either of you have logs from when this occured? Are you still unable to hear people now, since you mention it persisted after a restart?
Also, have you tried moving the Voice volume slider, and also individual people's volume sliders (in the Quick Menu)?
Without a repro there's not much we can do here, especially if it persists over a reboot.

Same issue here. I could hear the UI SFX and world BGM, but could not hear anyone's voice. The client recognizes the voices, as the UI shows user volume correctly. Trying doing everything from switching servers to restarting my PC with no avail. What's weird is that it was working fine on the first instance, but then it just completely stopped working on the second and the following even after a complete PC restart.
