[1480] Serious Degrade in Vive Touchpad Control
available in future release
ZenithVal
It seems Vive controllers have no emote bindings AT ALL anymore.
On live, the touchpad can control 5 emotes. With SteamVR bindings, we can only bind North, East, West, and South (Four) so if you manually bind them, muscle memory been altered. Consider making a SteamVR binding "Gesturewheel" which can be applied to touchpads which mimics previous behavior. This would also be beneficial to index touchpads. I'd personally consider them if this was the case.
With advanced controls, Gesture Weight could be driven with the trigger after selecting an emote (or to the fist emote directly)
A dedicated Boolean action for "Lock Gesture" appears to be missing on Vive controllers. I personally bound holding the menu button to locking my emotes WITHOUT advanced controls being enabled.
Movement has also drastically changed. On live, touchpad movement is done by clicking instead of by touch. When using advanced controls, you'd click to start moving and then stop clicking to control your emotes gradually with touch like it was a joystick (similar to beta behavior)

The current "vive-beta" available on steam aims to solve the issues with reduction in usability for Vive wands compared to the live version, in addition to generalizing the binds to be able to function on other controller types

Also, thanks for all the feedback!

Kung Thank you, Kung.

for better context, I made a screenshot. SteamVR 2.0 Input has no action sets in the TrackPad Position section.

Vive Wands have become significantly worse in the PC beta
Medasian
Unable to use the trackpads on Vive Wands for both gestures and movement in the PC beta, because movement is no longer a click-hold-touch action, only a touch. So touching the trackpads for any other reason, including clicking or clicking and holding them, will move or rotate you. Having an option to click-hold-touch for movement would be nice, or a way to just use the old skeleton system.

I can tell that they were trying to copy the way you would do gestures on the Oculus/Meta touch controllers but didn't execute it well. There are people that just use Vive controllers for its touchpad wheel way of gestures, and doing Idle or Rock & Roll on the controllers in the beta wants you to hold your trigger mid way which is somewhat strange.
It's confusing, it is a good idea and other games like Half-Life: Alyx and Pavlov do it but you can't do it when people still use Vive controllers on your game for it's unique way of gestures for avatars. They should fix the beta gestures and give us the option to switch between the beta, original, or advanced original controls.

It's litterally unusable, I instantly went back to live.
In my opinion, they should just switch back to the "old" system. You can't do anything better with these controllers.
Tehrasha
Nicalay2 the -only- thing this now permits, is variable speed on rotation, and thats all. It breaks everything else.
Nicalay2
Tehrasha I'm pretty sure that you already have variable speed on locomotion and rotation if you enable the Advanced Vive controllers thing on the "old" system.

I was wondering why this was happening, I thought I messed up my settings.. Is there any way to revert to the old one at all?
ZenithVal
fuzzylowe Exit beta for the time being. They're aware of the issue so we've all got our fingers crossed.
Smash-ter
Can the Gesture Wheel be bound to the thumbstick as well?
ZenithVal
Smash-ter If it was a vector2 option, it may be possible.
Smash-ter
ZenithVal It'd be neat since we could mimic how we do stuff on the desktop controllers + the chord stuff. It'd also be nice to have the ability to mimic Vive Advance Controls within the new binding system or for controllers that don't have capacitive touch support/proper drivers.
Gwiz
Makes the controller much worse to use ;-;

WHY. Why remove support for a controller that belongs to a headset that is still used today?!
I literally use the vive wands often still as an index controller owner as they're great for gestures, and another big reason I prefer the vive wands is because my hands are too small to use the index controllers and get good finger tracking, i cant even reliably make most of the gestures, my fingers are too short.
plus with the vive wands you can even rebind other gestures to the trigger and use gesture weight on them which has always been cool and was something only exclusive to the vive wands as far as I'm aware, which you can't do on index.
Just why??? Big L
