The ability to block a specific item globally
Scriptman
It would be nice to be able to block a specific item globally, the same way avatars can be blocked, regardless of who is using them.
This feature could be very useful for people with specific phobias (for example insects with the new bee gun, or fire from the New Year items), or just people who find certain items annoying, but still want to see and interact with other items.

Agreed this is a necessity for phobias. The bee gun sounds funny on paper but considering people can be deathly allergic to their stings it seems a little shortsighted.

This is definitely necessary with the release of items like the flyswatter. There are a lot of people who really cannot handle the sensation of being hit with things in VR, and an item that's meant specifically for that is problematic.

Honestly been wanting this since items were introduced; even setting aside accessibility issues just being able to globally block 'annoying' items should be a no-brainer. Also the fact we can globally hide prints but not stickers absolutely baffles me.
I think the most elegant solution would be to add 'Hide Items, Stickers and Emojis' to the settings the same way we can hide prints; and also add an option when selecting a specific item that lets you disable all instances of that item. If it could be persistent that'd be perfect but even just being able to hide them on a per-instance basis would be a huge improvement.

I am 1000% for this, and include stickers/emojis into that too. The fireball emoji is one reason why I feel guilty for hurting someone unintentionally, and have stopped using it. They had an epileptic episode because I fired it into their face. Fun can have some drastic consequences. I would love nothing more than to apologize for what I did but I can't. I will own this mistake for as long as I live.

Would suggest for UX for this feature, that a blocked item is treated similar to a blocked avatar. All effects (code, sound and particles) are removed and it's replaced by a simple rounded corner cube of a similar size to the original mesh, something with a similar style to blocked avatars, with 'blocked item' message on it. This way players can be aware of where a blocked item is (placed, in hand, floating free, etc) but it won't cause any discomfort. This would let them still target an item to fully hide, unblock it or do moderation actions on it.
Given otherwise there would need to be a whole new menu screen just to list all possible items including ones players don't own themselves just so they have a way to block and unblock them.
Having a placeholder object like this would let users action the block or unblock as they needed to without needing to have the item themselves in their inventory.

Agreed, the bee gun is a good example, another one being the lighter for people who have recovered from a smoking addiction and don't want to get triggered (which is the reason I don't use it any more)

I am very glad to see this feature request raised. I saw the bee gun this morning when I logged in and received it. I immediately blocked/muted all item and effects SFX with the volume slider. I freak out if I hear buzzing of bees/wasps/other-insects near my ears. And as someone else commented everyone will be obsessively spamming fire on this for the next few weeks at least...
Seeing this ticket gives me hope for better methods <3

I also have a flying insect phobia. Would prefer to block certain things too.
Also the snow generator item kills my Streaming VR Bitrate, and is a bit of an eyesore. Having to manually disable each item piece by piece for this isn't fun

This is a great idea for people who still want to be able to see some items, just not all of them. Fireworks/sudden loud noises can be very bad for a lot of people, not to mention wasps/bees being a very common phobia. When a new item comes out, people tend to use it a lot for a few weeks, and it can discourage people from using VRChat if they're trying to avoid the item
