[Request]fallback avatars to non-friends as an anti-theft measure

A major cause of avatar theft can be caused by a malicious user knowing my avatar ID or by a cache being generated by loading the avatar in that user's environment.
Therefore, I think solution by sending the fallback (or vrc default) avatar ID for non-friend users.
It would also be preferable if this functionality could be toggled in the menu settings within VRChat.
Although this would be powerless in the case of friends with malicious users.
This would be an effective solution for many existing cases.

No. I get the frustration with ripping, I don't want other people using my stuff either, but this idea would harm VRC immensely.

For those who think encryption would be a better idea...
I took the time to write out a rough outline/proposal as feedback:
Sasha Mason
That would mean that I would see a significant chunk of the users as just default avatars. As someone who likes to see everyone's unique avatar, this would be a major turn-off. I understand the frustration with the ripping, but seeing other people's content is one of the best things about this game. Having this taken away from me would just kill a big part of the game for me.
Not only that, but now people may not accept me as their friend if they aren't sure I wouldn't be ripping their assets. Cool, so this adds a system that actively discourages you from making friends.
Here's a non-destructive solution to the problem: Don't upload.
I know it seems like a silly thing, but the moment you upload to VRChat, someway somehow people will find ways to get access to those files.
If you want to be in your own avatar but have others see you as a fallback, upload your own avatar as a local test one, then get ingame, pick any of the default avatars of your choice, then select the local test avatar and done, you get to be you while everyone sees you as something else.

Why are we getting stuck on this?
Forget about the anti-rip arguments.
My files, my choice; You don't get to tell me how my files get distributed.
ashe-to-dust
fictus: Prepare to be blocked by everyone on VRChat then.
fictus
ashe-to-dust: Non-friends already don't get my files, and no one has ever blocked me for that.
So it's not about whether you can see an avi or not. It's about whether you are aware of it.
I think the devs should let us select an avatar to be used for non-friends, so that they won't suspect a thing.
fictus
Thanks for the inspiration, you're so useful ^^
Goblin_Mode
fictus: You have the choice to not upload them if you don't want VRC users to see them
fictus
Goblin_Mode: What if I want just friends to see em?
I'm just asking for more granular control.
fictus
And as I commented earlier, instance types aren't a solution because:
" You get to curate your friends, but not your friends' friends.
Friends+ / Invite+ ain't a solution, and friends / invite suffer from the same issue for non-owners of the instance."
Goblin_Mode
fictus: I don't think anyone should have that level of control outside of curating their company in a private instance. Forcing users to see something different to what a select few see is weird and disjointed, it's already bad enough with the seperation between what PCVR users and questies see.
fictus
Yet you can still experience the person, their voice and personality. You can have fun and connect with them.
You won't be seeing a low-poly fallback. You'll see an avatar they chose and like. It may not be their own exact sona/avatar, but it's something that still represents them.
stereofoxmuviz
fictus: this. There's so many people saying it's a bad decision as if something bad would happen to them. A lot of people who put a lot of work on their avatars would love to have this feature, it's like if they didn't want them to have the chance to protect their work.
Someone finds a simple way to make theft harder and people are against it for no reason, because "i won't see your avatar" is not an excuse, not everyone wants you to see their avatar and there's no reason why they should show their avatar to you. If you really are so desperate to load their avatar, they'll just assume you want to rip it.
Just let people have the chance to have something good, it does 0 harm to you and it helps other people a lot
fictus
Doesn't have to be about ripping.
Some people want to put on their avatars things from their past, their life.
Could be trinkets from happy moments, or scars from traumatic events.
And they may not want to share those moments with strangers.
ashe-to-dust
fictus: Doesn't matter, i'm still gonna block snobs like you.
stereofoxmuviz
fictus: yes that too, it's literally a harmless feature that does good for many people that want to be able to decide who can see their avatars. I see no reason to be against that
CrossVadar
It would be a nice option to have. if people don't like to have their personal avatar show, just have a fall-back. Doesn't have to be the Quest-like fallback, but a selected fallback.
Added.
There are plenty of events going on in VRChat. Some people or event organisers might not have a strong PC. So meanwhile people can use their own Avatar while maintaining good FPS for others.
ashe-to-dust
Horrible. Anyone who uses a feature like this would get an instant block for me. I'm not going to bother talking to you if you are going to be this aggressively antisocial.
Honestly would also probably stop playing VRChat completely, part of the fun is seeing other people's cool avatars. And I'm not friending someone just because of their elitism.
Goblin_Mode
ashe-to-dust: Big same.

I think having the option to
NOT
show my avatar to none friends would be useful a way of slowing or stagnating the ripping scene. I don't think anything is lost in terms of this as if I wanted you to see a default avatar I would use a default avatar. Nothing creative is being blocked other than for myself.
I do believe there are other ways better than this idea though but I do like the option for this also.

Newt!
Counterpoint... they archive my avatars for free so i dont have to :)
`Squishy
Newt!: And you can't access any of them without "earning" credits by stealing even more avatars from other users. So get out of here with that "archive" bullshit they try to disguise their operation as. No one with half a brain or a fragment of a moral compass is falling for it.
Edit: Based on your other comments you seem abnormally interested in actively defending/dismissing the act of ripping, and openly confirmed having used the site. Both this mindset and the implication you may well be a ripper yourself, is more than enough to justify blocking you.
Disappear9
Bad idea, but not the worst one i ever heard.
If they really want to implement this, just make it OFF by default, let those user who care too much about avatar ripping to turn it on manually.
Waltervd
100% FULLY AGREE!
im sick and tired from the rippers store 0 IQ smooth brains stealing mine and my friends their avatars.
if not showing mine to non friends i would honestly not care if that became a thing.
for the people that dont want this just make a menu button to turn it off
just a simple "show avatar to non-friend true/false"
since we cant stop the ripperstore from taking avatars they can see why not just hide the avatar itself and the ripper store retards will dissappear
N
Newt!
Waltervd: who cares if your avatar has been ripped... sure someone might look like you but that does not matter since they cant act the avatar as you do... or just add small texture stuff on your avatar thats very clearly yours... soo they cant do anything with the textures
Ice of Spades
Newt!: Not everyone uses exclusively free assets, moron
Vesturo
Ice of Spades: ah yes, if in doubt just insult, right? your avatar will never be safe against ripping simply because they are stored on a server and can be pulled via api
Waltervd
Newt!: i make pretty much all accesoires myself and some of it is for sale so...
people stealing my assets isnt a good reason ?
the fact that its also just theft by it self ?
so if i come to your place and empty out your bank account(s) its fine cause too ?
Whaddageek
Waltervd: They weren't gonna pay anyway, you've not actually lost sales.
Waltervd
Whaddageek: then tell me why i keep making money from selling my assets hon.
Whaddageek
Waltervd: Because of other people who actually would pay.
