The Personal Mirror is a great feature that I use daily, but there are a few related pain points that irk me constantly:
  • I often accidentally grab the mirror, moving it away from where I want it (e.g., when using gestures that use the grip trigger).
  • The laser pointer visuals and haptics are annoying when I'm just sitting and chilling.
  • The ‘Grabbable’ setting, which resolves the above issues, as well as other useful settings, are deeply buried in the Action Menu.
Please design a fast and intuitive way to toggle the Personal Mirror’s ‘Grabbable’ state without needing to dig into the Action Menu.
My suggestion
Step 1: An easy-to-implement starting point
Make the Personal Mirror’s ‘Grabbable’ state dependent on opening the Quick Menu. (This manner of interaction already has multiple precedents in VRChat.)
This new behaviour could replace the behaviour that occurs when the ‘Grabbable’ setting is disabled in the Action Menu, or perhaps it could have its own setting to enable it.
Step 2: Nice-to-have polish
Add frequently-used settings buttons to the surface of the Personal Mirror. (Like a row of buttons across the top of the mirror.) You would interact with these buttons using the laser pointer, and they would only appear when the Quick Menu is open. These are the frequently-used settings that I would like to see:
  • Masking → Remote users
: I usually have this enabled, but sometimes I need to disable remote users for performance reasons.
  • Masking → World
: I usually have this disabled for performance reasons, but sometimes I want to enable it to see world-specific avatar effects or interactables in the mirror.
  • Grabbable
: This toggle will be needed to help with the following case: If you have ‘Tracking’ set to ‘World’ and you are using the new behaviour that I propose, then you could quickly toggle this setting to re-enable the normal always-grabbable behaviour so that you could close the Quick Menu and run around while holding the mirror. Then, when you settle down, you could quickly toggle it off again so it’s only grabbable with the Quick Menu open.
  • A close button
: Might as well have this while we’re at it.
One potential issue I foresee with my idea of having buttons on the surface of the mirror is that it might not work well for people who don’t use the ‘Immersive Move’ mode. An alternative idea would be to display the proposed buttons in the Quick Menu. The user would reveal these buttons using the same technique that we use to get options about a specific user (i.e., open the Quick Menu, aim at the Personal Mirror with the laser pointer, and pull the index finger trigger).
