Mutual Friends

I posted this on the feature request board o the vrc discord and I got some DMs saying that it’s a good idea, thought I would post it here. Basically my feature request is to add a way to see if you have mutual friends with someone, have it be a random person or some of your friends.

I have had to remove people in my friend group from my friends list before to be willing to go green/blue, sometimes temporarily, and the fact that this is not public info meant I only had to explain myself to them - people can be nosy. (I have stayed friends with them on Discord, the meaning of "friend" there is very different.) Also, without privacy controls, this makes it obvious if someone avoids adding one person in particular, both to that person and to the friend group.
In general, I think this could be a nice feature, but it could also create pressures to add (and then not remove) people who you don't actually want joining you, which could in turn push people further away from joinable statuses. I think privacy controls are required at a minimum (Discord has none), as well as thought about whether these dynamics can be mitigated. (For example, this would be less of an issue if you could set your status colour per group of friends.)
One last thing: if this is available on the website, and people start tracking it (as we know people do) and making feeds of who friended or unfriended who, that removes the need for people to even notice changes themselves.

So, what I personally and a few others have requested before me, maybe not on here, is a feature that allows you to see mutual friends. A mutual friends viewer would allow you to know that your friends had met an individual already, and will help improve some people's "clicks."

Very good idea. I support this but users should be able to choose whether to let others see their mutual friendsor not, I mean a switch in privacy settings.

dqwyy: 100% agree- I think just publicly having that to anyone in the world or on your friends list is a bit too open for some people, like me personally.

King Nex: What's so open about seeing each other's mutual friends, in the same time he's mine and yours friend too?

envy Dash: I had a stroke reading that- but I just don't want every single person to be nosey in my business and I'm sure others agree. Especially as a creator, not everyone wants the option to be stalked. Someone who wants to be left alone and hang out with a few close friends... could very easily be harassed by someone joining off of a mutual only because they know they are mutuals or getting to know said mutual to use or get something from someone. They'd be forced to live in invite only worlds if it became a personal issue. It's just annoying. Obviously wouldn't affect everyone, but that's why we have settings. If there was a toggle to make it public, friends only, or off, that would be very nice.

Neat ? would be nice to know if that person is related to X or Y friendgroup.

This would be neat, or even just an indication that a user has no mutual friends with you.
Often I get added by people and I'm not really sure who they are, whether they're someone that was an instance with my friends and I, or whether they're someone that added me from a game world.

Not so sure about random people seeing mutuals (One example is friending someone, and people on their friend-list wanting to friend you), but I don't see why not for my friends knowing who our mutuals are.
DarkSwordsman
FriendlyGaymer: I think the solve for this is simple, can even use instance terminology. It can be an option to restrict who it is shown to, with the following:
- friends+ (friends of friends)
- friends
- no one

I need this so badly it's unreal i dont evan have that many friends compared to some players but oh my is it ever hard to keep track to the point that its impossible

I think having a "mutual friends" section would go a long way to improve relations between users. I think it is nice to see who is already friends with someone, and plus it can even be a conversation starter.
And then for people that do not wish to show their mutual friends, they can toggle it off. This is a feature that exists on many other social platforms, and I think it would be useful here.
