Mesh Haptics for World and Player
Takkun the Cat
To help increase spacial awareness and immersion at a haptic level.
Before the security update, I had functionality to customize the the haptics to a far more immersive level of touch. Now that the game has a native support of this feature (Haptics on Touch), the haptic experience has been greatly reduced. The feature needs to be brough up to par in terms of utility. As it stands now the feature is a gimmick and a bit of a slap in the face to the users that were enthusiests with this feature. The biggest loss has been that of haptics on touching meshes. I and others I knew were very fond of that functionality as it enabled us to ensure that we weren't walking through our mute friends by checking where they were without looking. We also used it to make sure our characters were at specific points or that we were performing actions in ways that made sense by having a physical feedback when the avatar made contact with the intended item. It was also a necessity for us to make sure we weren't touching others in ways we did not intend to by making us aware that we had.
Currently the feature has two sliders. I'm glad there is some customizability, but the end result is more of a waste of battery power than anything to enhance the experience to its old standard. There needs to be curves to adjust, floors and cielings, and strengths individually assignable to different kinds of meshes, whether they be player or world etc. Also velocity of objects or bones over your hands is an important factor to the sensitivity of the haptics amd should be adjustable. Every person is different and will have different comprehensions of the haptics, but the way it is now doesn't leave any way to comprehend its utility, only its gimmick. All of this is needed to get a proper physical presence in vrc's virtual worlds at a basic level. It's needed to know that there is somone behind you, or that somone is trying to get your attention by waving something through your hands. Knowing you've been backed against a wall or against the floor before you clip through and potentially startle yourself. There's many uses for people that use the feature heavily.
I relied on that feature to comfortably play the game, and it's current form has pushed me away more than it's kept me playing. I'd like to support the game again financially, but I can't bring myself to do it until I feel I can invest time in the platform again. I can't really support a game that won't respect my own desire to respect others personal spaces. What I can do is voice the request for a change here though.
I appreciate any time or thought that goes into changes or even just consideration for changes going forward. I know it was possible for a small community to achieve this goal, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it would get implemented natively. Thank you in advance.
