Imposter distance suggestion
TheDoctor
Regarding the "Imposters" feature showcased in the April 2023 dev update, I have a suggestion. It would be helpful to have a feature similar to the ear muff mode, where players can adjust the distance at which imposters are visible. For example, if a player is far but not too far away, the imposter would be visible, but if they move further away, the diamond used for the avatar hider would appear. It would be great if this feature could also include adjustable sliders, like the ear muff mode.

Wondering if VRC is aware of feedback like this? Seems great

now that the distance hider shows solid diamonds it is even more obvious at distances or in photos, so it would be nice if there was more options for how this is displaying, including as imposters instead of the diamonds

Well, that's how imposters are meant to be used in the first place, as LODs !

instead of diamonds why not use imposters instead? imposters are very low quality and dont use any features of the avatar so they are way less likely to crash anyone at all

LoppyDaCutie They still have the networked IK, so they're not
quite
as performant, but yeah, should definitely be an option, it's still far better performance than having 30 avatars in the distance without LODs.LoppyDaCutie
Swinglywould be less laggy though xP

It would be really nice if this system was implemented as a toggle for avatar culling. Can still see the avatars as impostors when they are culled by distance creating a LOD system or culled by nearest amount of players which still allows you to kinda see the rest of the avatars around you with little impact on your system

Echoing sentiment that this seems like a great use of the impostor system, allowing me to see roughly how people want to be seen under a wider variety of circumstances without it hitting my performance as hard.
Diamonds are boring, grey robots already rob people enough of their identity before that and fall-backs while preferable to the former are still a step short of ideal. Most avatars don't have them and alternative fall-backs typically don't replicate tracking that accurately... Conversely, the impostors I've seen on random dancers have tracked way nicer than I thought they would!
Having essentially a LOD like system like this seems like it might be an enticing option, even if performance wise it wouldn't be as good as the more identity scrubbing types we have right now.
Seeing random impostors in-game further convinced me that this'd be something I'd love to see. Knowing its the closest thing to how that person wants to be seen feels really nice to me. Of course I still have options if I really don't like what I see...

This was my first hope for use in 80 user instances when I heard about the imposter system!

It would be quite a nice thing to have ; have it work like the audio system.
X distance => Show Avatar
Y distance from X => show impostors

From experience if I'm in a full club world I can show 15 closest avatars, have full VRAM used and have decent frames, but as soon as I increase shown avatar amount I get typical 5fps from VRAM actively swapping to RAM. If I can show 10 closest avatars instead of 15 and in that freed ~200-400 mb of actively used VRAM load 20-40 more impostors, I would be a REALLY happy man and my user experience would be quite heightened

Its literally an LOD system to begin with so let it do LOD things.
