Display pronouns under name
in progress
MooglyRidge
It would be really nice if we could enter our pronouns in our profile, and have them displayed under our username in-game.
Obviously people will refer to me as a guy when I open my mouth, and I get that. If it bothered me too much I would simply just not talk to anyone with my voice. The thing is, a lot of people would want to use their own voice, which might not normatively match their chosen pronouns. A lot of which will understandably not be able to shrug off being misgendered as easily.
Therefore, since some people out there will actually respect if I chose "they/them" on my profile, I propose that giving them the opportunity to actually respect that would be great!
I've attached a concept for what I mean.

As expected, literally 0 people I met used it as intended.
First pronouns I see joining in vrc today:
- tralalelo trallala
- vrchat admin
- KYS
- potato
- chicken jokey
- gojo satoru
- ass penis
... and ofc n word
best update 10/10 lmao
My opinion isn't changed, and I still believe it would be better to keep it in bio. This just adds more visual garbage.

I often find myself in situations where we have a discussion going and I want to refer to a person or what they said earlier.
In these situations, I usually default to "they" when I'm not sure about their pronouns. This works.
But if I could just push the menu button and have a glance at their nameplate instead of having to target them with a laser pointer, scroll through their bio and hope to find the pronouns in there, that would definitely make it easier.
I read arguments that it would put people at risk, clutter the UI, and that we don't have this in real-life either.
To me, most of those are non-arguments.
If people are scared to use this feature, don't use it. It's a personal choice, just like what people put or don't put in their bio. Obviously, nobody should be forced to give away information that they are not comfortable sharing.
Ideally, people would be able to choose who to expose that information to. That's how other social platforms already do it (public, friends, friends+) and I don't see why that approach wouldn't work for VRChat.
If people think it is clutter or costs too much performance, make it an option to exclude that info from other people's nameplates and just have it in the profile, just like the languages.
And refusing an option that technology offers just because "we don't have it in real-life" is pretty backwards. The ability to have real-time, long distance conversations with people all over the world used to be something we didn't have either. It is enabled by technology, something we as human species invented and that is largely considered an improvement over having someone physically deliver pieces of paper with written communication.
For me, this is not really a question on whether it should be implemented or not, but how it can be done in a way that satisfies most users' concerns.

Bruh this thread is still active.
It's literally 3 (three) clicks to see user's bio: open menu, click capsule, open full profile.
That's all. And it is not only about pronouns. Good practice is to check profiles of users you meet, to form your first image of person correctly and to avoid any misunderstandings or any other communication problems. Always check bios, not only for pronouns. That's pupose of bio. If someone put that text in bio, they want you to read it and continue communication according to that info.
Nameplate serves two purposes:
- Identify user quickly (nickname and icon)
- Figure out volatile status quickly (loading, speaking, muted, performance, ...)
Pronouns are non-volatile and can not help you identify one uther from others.

Lots of the comments on this thread do that weird thing where they go "We can't give trans people the tools to communicate their pronouns easily because people will harass them!" yeah okay if that's a concern for an individual they can turn it off. Trans people can handle themselves, we understand the inherent risk of making it easy for people to identify us, we should be able to choose if we are comfortable with that risk for ourselves, other people shouldn't make the choice for us. Don't treat us like children.
Right now, we can only put pronouns in either our status or our bio. If it's anywhere other than the first line of the bio, it will not show up on hover and users will need to open our profile fully to see it. If it's in the status, I can't use it as... a status. Additionally, very few people seem to have statuses visible by default and if you put it in your bio, that requires, at minimum, highlighting a user to see the first line. Both involve opening the Quick Menu, something that distracts from social interactions.
Having it displayed on the name plate provides a dedicated place for people to look, and while some people may abuse the feature to put some nonsense in place of their actual pronouns... uh, sure, let them, if you want to broadcast your pronouns as attack/helicopter go for it I guess, that sort of nonsense stops fast when you actually start referring to people by their "joke" pronouns.

It would be great to add pronouns to your profile that are hovering over your head like the nametag. I did write my pronouns in the bio but no one is really reading it so that would be a damn useful feature
LakesGeek
Yes please. One mod I used automatically detected and extracted from the bio and I found it very useful. If it's in the bio why not make it more visible.
Disappointing and mildly transphobic comments in here. Don't want a pronoun visible don't put one in. Just make it optional

Nice feature to have.

Not a bad idea but can't you already put it in your status or bio like most people who use specific pronouns already do?
ForeverAndaDay
Would definitely support this. Probably on quick menu open though, just like trust rank and avi performance, although setting it to alway display as an option wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I used to love this game before I realized being my assigned gender at birth was a detriment to my mental health. now because of my voice I cant correct someone without it leading to the same old "heres what I think about trans people" conversation.
because avatars are pretty much gender neutral and names are gender neutral, people default to voice to figure out the way to treat you. This isn't the case in real life as your name and physical presentation usually can give the other person a hint. I find it ironic that I can present a better representation of myself in real life than in vrchat, I just pass better in real life. I struggle to play this game now because it causes too much dysphoria.
Best approach? make it compulsory, so from afar you aren't distinguishable as a trans person so nobody walks across the room to harass you. Default to They/Them but give an option box easily accessible and visible in the avatar window. to save on rendering costs you could make special characters and add them to the end of the users name.
Extra positive? honestly it will help with the transphobia problem because transphobes will not tolerate the tolerance and leave. honestly they make your game more toxic.
