Allow audio sources on Quest avatars
xxx_red_xxx
I don't understand how audio sources can affect performance, I wanna make a quest compatible avatar cause one of my friends is limited to quest only right now and I want to use my own avatar, I hate using avatars that aren't my own. But I can't put a simple gunfire effect on it because it lacks audio.

Audio for Quest avatars

So Avatar's on PC have audio right?
What if we could have audio on quest as well?
This would be a really awesome feature for quest!!!
imagine being able to toggle audio on and off for both platforms.
Like say if you wanted to listen to a certain audio on an avatar but you can't because your on Quest.
I think this would be a feature loved by all of VRchat's Quest user's like myself.

Please allow audio sources on avatars

This is one of the main reasons why VrChat is popular, but without this feature on quest, it feels utterly empty.

Avatar on quest had sneaky audio for awhile, but patched out as of February 2023 just noting for posterity

Essentially PC and Quest avatars should be offered the same experience (as on other platforms); Quest functionality should not be restricted.
This feature is important because VRChat does not have an props system.

100の人: A PC is much, much more powerful than any standalone VR headset. You can't just say they should have the same experience when they simply arent the same. VRC is already quite taxing on the Quest with its currently VERY restricted limits.
The main issue is, VRChat is a very unpredictable environment. Worlds have vasty different performances on Quest, and player count within a lobby is unpredictable too. They have to set the limits in a way that works in the worst possible scenarios for overall stability for every user.
That is just the way it has to be, no surprise since its mobile hardware. And not even the most powerful mobile hardware availble. The latest 2022 smartphone flagships are much more powerful than a Quest 2 for example.

BigSoulja: This is not to say that they should offer the exact same experience.
Certainly VRChat is very unstable compared to other social VR platforms, but I do not think that is a reason to give up on efforts to support Quest.
In particular, VRChat, along with the aforementioned props non-support, has left cross-platform support completely up to the user, and that policy is unlikely to change in the future. If that is the case, I think that the interface for that should be provided to users.

100の人: But they haven't given up efforts to support Quest? It wouldn't surprise me if there are more active Quest Standalone players than PCVR and Desktop combined. The hardware is simply too limited and the current limits set are in my opinion, completely appropriate.
Yes, the Quest could handle more things in a controlled environment. Better avatar shaders, larger avatar file size, more supported Unity components etc. But there is no viable way to scale the things you see, and the fidelity of avatars shown based on things like player count and world optimisation. The current solution of keeping things very limited is the best solution. Because it just works 99% of the time in a user friendly way.
You need to remember the Quest Standalone platform is not for enthusiasts. I would argue that PC is. The Quest is essentially a console and it needs to offer a good experience out of the box. Most Quest VRC players will not understand how to optimise the game by changing settings, limiting who they see and so on. VRC needs to be a very consistent experience on Quest, which is something they don't have to worry about nearly as much on PC because of its much higher specification potential. We can scale our hardware up to meet any demand.

BigSoulja: I understand a restriction with the meshes and the materials, but the audio is not as heavy to run as the things that I mentioned before. An audio source per avatar won't make the quest explode.
B
BigSoulja
WofFo_o: actually, it is. Running multiple audio sources on Quest is very taxing. You can actually crash quest players intentionally just by having too many players in an instance all talking at the same time. Converting bits into audio data uses resources, more than you would think.

This would be an amazing addition but I don’t think vrchat will do it because they have proven time and time again they don’t care about any of their players

Yes, since audio is becoming a thing with people being smart with avatars

I would love to hear audio on quest because when I'm using my PC and I use avatars I use on quest and they ended up having audio makes me upset about it
