Add Automatic Translation Support for Avatar Expression Menus
Emily Reese
A lot of people (including me) buy or use avatars that come from Japan, China, or other non-English-speaking regions. The problem is, most of the expression menus on those avatars are written completely in their original language — which makes it really hard to know what each option actually does unless you can read it or spend time translating every single one manually.
Right now, if someone can’t read Japanese or Chinese, they usually have to:
Take screenshots and use Google Translate or an OCR app.
Go into Unity and rename everything (which isn’t always allowed by the creator).
Or just keep guessing until they figure out what each toggle does.
That’s a pain, and it really discourages people from buying or using avatars made by international creators.
My Idea:
VRChat should add an auto translation option for Expression Menus.
Basically, when you open an avatar’s menu, VRChat would automatically detect the language of each label and display the translated version in your preferred language (like English).
There could be a few options for how it’s shown:
Show both original and translated (example: 「笑顔」 — Smile)
Or show only the translation.
Once translated, VRChat could store it locally so it doesn’t have to redo the translation every time.
Settings I’d Like to See:
A simple toggle in the main or quick menu: “Enable Expression Menu Translation.”
Option to choose whether to show both languages or just the translated one.
Use system language by default, but also allow manual language selection.
Offline cache for previously translated menu text.
Why It’s Worth Adding:
Makes non-English avatars way easier to use.
Helps connect the global VRChat community.
Encourages people to support creators from other countries.
Saves time and removes the need for third-party translation tools or Unity editing.
Example:
If someone uploads a Japanese avatar and the menu has options like:
「髪型切り替え」, 「目を閉じる」, 「笑顔」
VRChat would automatically show:
Hairstyle Change
Close Eyes
Smile
It’s simple, but it would make a huge difference for accessibility and ease of use.
Final Thoughts:
I really think this would help a lot of users who buy or share avatars from different languages.
It doesn’t have to be complicated — just an optional setting that lets people actually understand the menus on their avatars without needing external tools or editing files.
It would make VRChat a lot more inclusive and friendly for international users.

Still think this would be possible and a great idea.

If you’ve ever struggled to use an avatar because the menu was in another language, please upvote this feature! It would make a huge difference for international accessibility in VRChat.
