Make Chatboxes Default Everyone because...

VRChat defaults to letting me hear everyone, so the decision to make chatboxes default to "Friends" seems like a really confusing choice. Would also be nice to have a different setting for "chat" vs "system" messages. chat should default to everyone and system default to friends or better yet, off.
By chat I am referring to messages typed/sent via osc with the final parameter set to true (the one which controls if the sound plays). This would allow people to hide all the messages showing currently playing songs/current local time or weather/whatever but still see when a mute user is talking.

I'm not sure what the argument AGAINST this is. It seems like a major win for accessibility to have Everyone be the default.

I got catched by this too.
Two days ago played VRC from different PC. Haven't seen chat boxes, until realized on that PC I didn't configured privacy enough to see chat boxes.

110% this. The communities I help in explain how to enable this in newbie events, but there’s so many people who use the chat box to type who may have not been to one of those and it takes finding out through the grapevine that someone doesn’t know they need to show the chat box. It would be so much simpler to explain how to turn it off for folks who don’t want it than explaining to 40+ people how to turn on the chat box every week.

It is insanely hostile to users with disabilities and anxiety conditions to have the chat-box visibility setting configured to hide text messages from non-friends by default, when voice users have no such requirement.
Having one rule for text and one rule for voice creates a lesser class of VRChat user, signals that chat-box users are somehow less trusted despite the fact that the use of chat-boxes is so easily logged and moderated by VRChat T&S. (Far easier than it is to moderate voice communication)
One has to ask why this issue isn't acknowledged or tracked, given that it is a trivial change that speaks to basic accessibility requirements of a well-established community.

I believe chatbox visibility settings will do a better job if it was set to "everyone" by default, not many players really go to their settings and care enough to look around. Not everyone talks also, so if the chatbox was set to "everyone" by default it will be easier to a lot of "mutes" to communicate with some other players.

Please let everyone see chatboxes by default and explain to them how to disable them if needed because currently you cannot talk to majority of players unless you add everyone you want to talk to in the slightest way and thats just not a smart way to handle this.
Chat is not more of a moderation issue than voice is and its easy to mute someone if there would be a issue.
And also make chatboxes visible in the mirrors and give them a optional sound that is by default deactivated.
All these changes should make logical sense to any normal human being ...

1 Can we have chat box visibility set to everybody by default.
It's a massive communication barrier between new players and mutes because there has to be a third person involved that has chat box enabled to describe how to enable chat box to the visitor so the mute can communicate with them
2 Also it would be nice if we had the ability to turn off individual chat boxes like we have a mute button and hide Avatar button.
It's becoming more and more common for people to have never disappearing chat boxes that just display an extended status or what song they're listening to and it just gets annoying to see that chat box spam.

I agree this needs to be fixed it is extremely annoying to go find a third person who is capable of speaking and has chat box enabled to talk to a visitor or somebody who is unaware that chat boxes are set to friends only
I help run a Community where we have to age check people because it's a bar roleplay kind of situation but when I'm the bouncer I always need somebody there with me to be my voice because most people who come in are visitors who don't have chat boxes turned on because they're set to friends only by default
I've had to add a sign that describes how to enable chat boxes for everybody to my Avatar which people still don't see sometimes because of safety settings
