VRChat randomly crashes to desktop with no error
complete
Zimmerson
Since the update came out, VRChat is unexpectedly crashing/closing down. I have literally no clue why, but I'll be doing nothing, talking with friends and there will be a few short lag sessions before crashing to desktop. There are no errors, it just closes down. Before the update this never happened, now this is an extremely common occurance.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: Darn, I was gonna send logs, this hasn't been fixed, Ill try to send some later, has anyone else done it?

If you want to help us solve this issue, please read this post!
If/when you experience this, please grab the following:
- Latest output log, from %UserProfile%\AppData\LocalLow\VRChat\vrchat (copy and paste into Explorer address bar). Grab the latest output_log_HH-MM-SS_AM/PM.txt
- The latest crash dump from Windows, from %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\CrashDumps (copy and paste into Explorer address bar). Grab the latest one labeled VRChat.exe.numbers.dmp. If there aren't any, that's fine.
ZIP up those files. Very important that you compress them-- the DMP file can be large (~15-30MB) and compressing it will shrink it a lot. Same with output log, especially if something is wrong.
Upload it to Google Drive or Dropbox, set the link to Public, and provide it to our Support staff by creating a ticket at https://help.vrchat.com/new (select "SUP" for category). Please provide a link to this Feedback item in the email, so we know which issue it is linked to!
These crash dumps and output logs are exceptionally helpful in figuring out what's causing crashes, and if this is all the same issue or several different issues.
Thank you!

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: I would just like to mention that over the versions of vrchat some updates result in the applicaiton not forcefully shutting down. So for example in vrchat 932 my most recent crashes require me to exit vrchat and that does not create a crash dump. I've already sent through my crash logs and output logs in my current support ticket so I hope those are accepted in this process for collecting information.
I'm mentioning this because this means that with my particular reported crash, the same as many mentioned here, some users may not generate their crash logs if they dont wait long enough, or if it hangs indefinitely. Most people will see the freeze and immediately close vrchat to restart it. It used to take a few seconds for the application to fully crash on a freeze but it appears it just freezes indefinitely now.

until now , very annoying~

xxx_red_xxx: Please, as a creator who also hates bugs and wants things fixed as well--keep canny posts to the bug reports, this is counter productive. They are real people who read these.

For me, for whatever reason anyways, It's always been caused by the steamclient64.dll file for the crashes I've had as of recently. I've noticed most people have experienced it with the mono.dll causing an access violation, But Steam's own files for VRchat seem to be causing the issue instead for me. If anyone can help, it'd be appreciated.
Dog Doggerson
Timtee: Opt out of the Steam Client Beta. That fixed it for me.
Timtee
Dog Doggerson: Maybe... Altho a simple reinstall of some games will sometimes fix it, As it's tied mostly to the overlay as well, so if the overlay is enabled, It's almost guaranteed to cause your game to crash the instant it completely loads if the overlay code for it is damaged in any way.
Dog Doggerson
Timtee: definitely wasn't the overlay or game installation in my case as I disabled the overlay and reinstalled the game but still had the problem. Only opting out of the steam client beta fixed it

Same issue, I'm on the original rift, and my screen will randomly freeze or rapidly dulplicate, almost seizure like and then it will usually crash shortly after, while the screen is frozen movement and sound still work, but the game fails to render the screen, happens randomly but its a real problem.
Observer.
For those unaware, because I certainly was, the vrchat crash logs are now located in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Temp\VRChat\VRChat\Crashes.
(For those that want to quickly go to that directory copy and paste this: %localappdata%\Temp\VRChat\VRChat)
I'd be curious to know if you guys are receiving the same crash as indicated at the top of the error.log file and what gpu and drivers you are running. Might be worth sending any of your crash folders through with a support ticket.
My details and crash error to share with you all
Hardware - Oculus Rift CV1
GPU - Nvidia GTX 1080ti
GPU Driver - version 445.87
Crash - d3d11.dll caused an Access Violation (0xc0000005) in module d3d11.dll at 0033:b812e5e0

Observer.: Everything you can do for now, as it's Oculus or VRChat problem bc Vive and Index users don't see any problems, is increase Tdr values in registry.
TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) is Windows mechanism which is resetting GPU driver bc card is unresponsive for more than 2 sec. (default value of TdrDelay btw).
Massive lag spikes from nowhere (flickering screen) seems to be triggering this mechanism and after graphic driver restart, screen in game is frozen and you need to restart the game.
Temporary fix, to time when it'll be fixed, is to set TdrDelay from 2 to 10 as duration of these lag spikes seems to be more than 2 but less than 10 seconds and TdiDdiDelay to 15, better to 15 btw. If it'll be not enough try 15 for TdrDelay and 20 for TdrDdi. For me it was helpful, if it'd not help then it's really faulting hardware.
Observer.
Milky1994: Yep I saw your post below. The only reason I have not done that yet is because I'm still gathering more information.
Do you have any crash logs and what errors are you getting? listing the same details that I did above would be helpful in confirming we are having the same issue and that its not a hardware failure on my end.
Milky1994
Observer.: I was gathering infos from April when the problem for Rift users began. From what I know, why only for us? Bc Vive and Index users were and are just crashing, they don't get frozen screen as us. I began research firstly from my friends and then I went with it to Twitter.
Being honest? I got errors like 'hardware failure' when screen was getting frozen and ones like yours when VRC crashed with frozen screen and I looked closer on these error but... honestly it helped me nothing. I'm playing VRChat through Steam btw bc of PlayspaceMover and Kinect2VR.
This what really helped me figuring out what is happening was Hans Peter comment as he had directly in game log file what happened when screen got frozen. You should examine it closer, especially error code, this will say you more than errors from reliability monitor.
I tested my temporary solution for already 3 days and I think that I got through frozen screen safely 2 times and bonus, I even go safely probably from GPU crasher who got into the world one time ;)
Btw if you want to talk about it more in details, you can add and meet me in game or find and dm me on twitter :)

Milky1994: Just want to say this fix has given me a stable experience for the past month or so. I can survive some of the worst lag spikes. Really wish the devs would officially address and fix the issue, since it doesn't occur in any other VR game I play. Thank you for posting!

rift user loses video in headset after short time in worlds. They can still speak and their avatar moves correctly but their view in headset is locked . Happens in worlds that never had issues. Happens after this int he log 2020.05.06 21:53:02 Warning - D3D11: Failed to create RenderTexture (1157 x 768 fmt 19 aa 1), error 0x887a0005 still in latest 924 build
Milky1994
metallicfoam: And this is what I was waiting for bc I couldn't find something like that in game log files. 0x887a0005 happens when TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) is resetting GPU bc card is unresponsive for more than 2 sec. (default value of TdrDelay btw) so it can have in common with massive lag spikes as duration of some of these lags are indeed more than 2 seconds. It's not our hardware, thank God, it's just bad programmed software (in this case it's Oculus or VRChat but I think that VRChat is one causing it) as this problem happened and is happening in many other games. What I can advise for now is just increasing value of TdrDelay from 2 to 10-15 sec. while waiting for devs to fix the problem and see if it's working.
metallicfoam
Milky1994: Thanks for the tip milky. setting tdrdelay to 15 has allowed my girlfriend's rift to recover from the shaking/gpu crash . multiple times while watching a 2 hour movie in vrchat. the symptoms happened 5 times but was able to recover with the longer delay each time. vrchat is the only game that this happens to her rift. hopeful this will get fixed in a future update
Milky1994
metallicfoam: Glad to hear that :) Yeah, it can happen few times per game session and normally it ends with frozen shaking screen but with increased Tdr game is getting back to normal. Thank you for logs, without it temporary fix still wouldn't be known.
Btw, there is one more value to change and it's TdrDdiDelay. In your case it should be increased to, minimally, 15 sec. but if it's working good for now, honestly, I wouldn't change it.
Hope they'll fix it bc we shouldn't be one who are investigating problem and trying to fix it.

Haven't used my rift much but setting TdrDelay to more conservative 6 was enough to recover on my setup

This seems that after update to 2020.1.1, game tends to crash graphic driver so it's probably problem with GPU utilization. First massive lag from nowhere and then screen freeze, I can hear people, I can talk with them and tracking of VR is ok. Interesting thing is, I can normally go to Steam VR or Oculus Dash so it's not graphic card or Oculus thing, it's game or Unity 2018 problem.
While game crashes, it gives me red cross sign 'hardware failure' in reliability monitor and in the event viewer i get this 'Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered'
I hope that will help you somehow to find the problem.
Milky1994
Edit: After I talked with some friends today, it seems that my speculations from April seems to be true. I did some research throught friends and strangely people with Vive didn't have any problems, people who has the frozen screen problem are Oculus users.
Literally when 2020.1.1 was out, the same day Oculus pulled the update as well and it was like, firstly the problem was caused by Oculus but 2 weeks later Oculus pulled out update which, according to my friend words, fixed it but next update of VRChat bringed this problem back.
Summarizing, it seems to be some kind of problem between VRChat and Oculus.

i realize i quite possibly have said what most people have said but in the hopes of giving more data i gotta say.
i will get on most of the time quest specifically but sometimes PC too and after 5 minutes of play i will crash. does not really matter how many people in a room doesn't matter witch world and it doesn't matter if i block all avatars in a room and just stare at a wall.
it generally crashes more when more than 2 avatars are in front of me and multiple people speaking. i hope that you find the problem soon i like staying connected and having fun with everyone on vrchat.

would have actual marathons of being in vr for a couple days at a time before the update just for fun with friends. now ill crash minimum 5 times per play session. glad this one is in progress so something is at least being looked into but this is getting super irritating. i would gladly take back the previous version without all this new stuff just to be able to be on consistently again.
