For some reason since the latest update VRchat will ONLY launch in Desktop mode through the Oculus PC app even if I go to the desktop with headset on and explicitly click "Launch in VR mode".

VRChat 2022.1.1p4, build 1173 has updated to the latest version of OVRPlugin. According to oculus, it fixes the following issue:
"OVRPlugin can't be loaded on certain CPUs that do not support AVX2 instructions"
It appears that this caused the issue being described in this post. If you have been affected, please try updating. Post here again if the issue persists.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR VRCHAT DEVS: Update to latest build of Oculus Integration SDK for Unity ASAP!! That may be all it takes to fix this issue we've been having!
More Details:
I've been doing some research and apparently, the problem all of us are having may be related to an issue which cropped up in the previous release of the Oculus Integration SDK for Unity, specifically with CPUs which do not support AVX2 instructions. (I have an AMD FX-8350 which, AFAIK, does not have AVX2 instructions support.)
The latest build as of the day I'm writing this (which will result in an OVRPlugin version of 1.70, VRChat is currently using 1.69) indicates that this specific issue has been fixed. I don't code with Unity so do not have an easy way to test this out; if anyone here does, please try this out and see what happens when dropping in the 1.70 version of the DLL into VRChat!
Gonna send another eMail to the VRChat team ASAP to let them know about this too!

According to Wikipedia, among Intel processors, the first to ship with AVX2 were Haswell Core and Xeon CPUs in 2013. followed by Haswell-E and Broadwell in 2014.
My CPU (which I've previously noted is an i7-3820) is a Sandy Bridge-E from 2012, predating AVX2, so it sounds like this could very well be the smoking gun.

I've discovered a temporary workaround! :D
The problem is definitely the OVRPlugin.dll file itself, as something is wrong with the version of this file currently being distributed with VRChat. I tried replacing the OVRPlugin.dll for VRChat with the OVRPlugin.dll from a different Oculus app which I knew was working fine and VRChat properly boots into VR now! That said, different games are going to have different builds of the OVRPlugin.dll file so I don't think this is guaranteed to work and is going to depend on which game you try to pull this file from. The game I pulled my replacement from is Master Bladesmith, as I knew it was updated very recently and thus would have a recent build of that file.
I should also note I have now tested both the Live and OpenBeta builds on Oculus and BOTH are suffering from this issue, so for those of you working on VRChat, please get that OVRPlugin.dll file fixed up!

Alright, it's entirely the OVRPlugin.dll file that Pastel_Blue_Sky said. I downloaded a old 2020 version of the file and put it in Oculus\Software\Software\vrchat-vrchat\VRChat_Data\Plugins and it works fine. I would suggest https://www.opendll.com/index.php?file-download=ovrplugin.dll&arch=32bit&version=1.25.0.0 for the dll file, but please note that I have no idea if the site is safe. I checked the file and it was clean but use at your risk.

Tandy~: The download you have linked simply downloads a 0 byte ZIP file. It may have been taken down.

Gemini000: That's disappointing, ill try to find another site then. I do believe your solution is a bit more safe, instead of random dll sites.

This is happening to me too. I have trouble talking in voice chats so when it's in desktop mode my brain considers it a voice chat rather than talking. So basically I haven't been able to play. I believe it is something to do with Oculus rather than VRchat.
Gemini000
Tandy~: It's something to do with the Oculus build of VRChat specifically. All of my other Oculus apps are working just fine; this is the only one which is failing to function.
T
Tandy~
Gemini000: That sounds about right, though not all the people I know that use the Oculus build are having this issue.
Gemini000
Tandy~: Clearly a bunch of people though, plus we can trace it back to a specific update as everything was working fine until then. I can think of all kinds of potential hiccups which would affect some users and not others, especially since the kind of Oculus headset doesn't seem to matter, but it may be tricky narrowing it down. I'd gotten in touch with the VRChat support staff earlier at the start of the month to provide additional details directly and was told this was being investigated, but for the moment it's still an issue. :/

Gemini000: I did the same a few days ago and got the same response, plus a link to here.

I was able to start VR after using the backup data I had taken on February 1.
It seems that the OVRPlugin.dll file in the latest "Oculus\Software\Software\vrchat-vrchat\VRChat_Data\Plugins\x86_64" is causing a problem.

Pastel_Blue_Sky: Do you have a copy of the older .dll file? It could be useful to us that haven't been able to play.

Also having this issue, works on steam vr just fine but not on the Oculus app (which means way extra lagg without using the oculus version) using the Rift cv1, hope it gets fixed.

Same and it’s worse because I can’t access my VrChat files for some reason so I can’t provide my output to support.
I hope this gets fixed.
