VR controllers are not recognized at ALL after VRChat launches
Linkz Ontwitch
Controllers are seen fine in SteamVR Home and appear briefly on loading into VRChat but disappear after a few seconds and afterwards are no longer recognized at all. I have removed all overlay/settings programs, restarted, rebooted, reinstalled. Nothing resolved the issue.

if anyone is still active on this forum PLEASE HELP :')!
Ive followed EVERY STEP which inclues:
-uninstalling/reinstalling steam
-going in \Steam\steamapps\common\VRChat and deleting VRChat Folder
-Changing characters in the desktop mode (for the hopes of it helping)
-Reset bindings
-reset oculus
If it helps i went into the controller debugging UI and it says everything is false.
example:
Source -
Binding - (priority 0)
Active - False
Origin -
Value - False
(its like that on every /action/legacy)
But i have the same issues as the videos posted below (controllers work everywhere BUT VRChat (and OVR Toolkit)), been troubleshooting for hours and still nothing works. HALP!

I'm having this same exact issue controllers work when i bring up steamvr ui but not in game

I fixed my issue by doing what DainVR said how ever on top of that i also had to download the SteamVR Beta. after all that my stuff started working again.

Fixed by reinstalling Steam entirely. According to Links, Uninstalling VRChat and deleting \Steam\steamapps\common\VRChat folder then re-installing should suffice.

Other note, my WMR controllers appears as Vive controllers in game.

This issue was resolved by uninstalling and then deleting the \Steam\steamapps\common\VRChat folder then re-installing.

DainVR: Looks like exactly what's going on with me

For reference I am using an Samsung Odyssey+ in this video. I have also tested it with my Oculus Quest using Link and there are still no controllers in SteamVR. (The Oculus client, however works fine.)

Unable to reproduce. Can you try the steps given here?

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community:
I have successfully followed the instructions and verified the deletion of all applicable folders, and registry entries. Validated all files and loaded VRC directly from Steam. Still no controllers. Here is the latest log file: https://pastebin.com/JBJusKB1

Linkz Ontwitch: Do the controllers still appear in your SteamVR mini-window when you're in VRChat?
Linkz Ontwitch
Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: Yes They appear and function properly while in the SteamVR Home and all other games. When I load VRC the "Ghost" controllers appear in-game a second or two then disappear. If I physically turn them off VRC switches to a desktop mode and I can use my mouse/keyboard to open menus, but as soon as I turn the controllers back on that functionality is lost, so the game IS recognizing they are there on some level, but that goes beyond my expertise to describe.

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: I have exactly the same problem (Vive, SteamVR 1.11.12) , and it's 100% repro. I've tried the automatic, manual, and full uninstall/reinstall of the game. As of Friday the Index controllers will just not work in your game.
If I turn off both controllers, the HMD becomes an active pointer (but there's no way to click). The logs don't provide much, but I'm happy to share them.
This happened on the same day I installed LIV overlay. I've disabled LIV (and its virtual tracker that's installed for camera placement), and there is no change. Every other game works fine, with or without LIV.
I'm in game development (and working from home), happy to help an engineer diagnose the issue. It's a wonderful title that provides a real need in these times.

I'd tried everything, and nearly given up on being able to play this game again.
I just now tried uninstalling AND deleting \Steam\steamapps\common\VRChat (which is an additional step above and beyond the other one that includes purging temp files and registry).
THAT WORKED.

And then it came back. But I figured it OUT!
Liv is creating a file called externalcamera.cfg in steamapps\comon\VRChat. ***This is not removed on uninstall, and is the culprit. When VRChat sees this file, for some reason it disables the controller inputs!

Albejorn: THIS IS THE ANSWER!!!
the whole controller not working in vrchat was bugging me for maybe a week but it was only with vrchat, every other game was great. my problem didn't show up until i downloaded liv and i uninstalled it earlier today thinking that would help,it didn't. i tried uninstalling everything i could(including controller drivers for gamepads and all that because in my vrchat home i noticed the holoport blue arrow thing just staying there for some reason),reinstalling and following all the rabbit holes on the internet but finally stumbled along this post.i saw the exact file you mentioned in the vrchat folder, promptly deleted it and vrchat worked again!

15digitlongname: Glad it helped!!! :D
I made a directory with the name externalcamera.cfg (well, actually a junction, but a directory probably would work).
This allows me to keep LIV installed (LIV sees the "file" exists and doesn't recreate it, AND Unity doesn't treat the directory as a camera override). LIV is aware, and is working on a patch it until VRChat can address the issue.
Happy gaming!
