[Unity 6] TextMeshPro Fallback Fonts Broken / Rendering Block Glyphs
needs more information
RiskyKen
When using a custom Font Asset after the Unity 6 update, missing glyphs (such as Korean characters) no longer correctly utilise fallback fonts. Instead, they render as missing block characters. If the built-in default LiberationSans SDF is used, the fallback mechanism works as intended.
I have tested multiple fallback configurations, none of which resolved the issue:
• Linking LiberationSans SDF explicitly as a fallback inside the custom Font Asset.
• Linking it in the TextMeshPro Project Settings.
• Leaving all fallback fields empty to let VRChat's system handle the fallback behaviour.
Attached Files:
• Image 1 & 2: Expected behaviour before the Unity 6 update (English and Korean glyphs rendering properly).
• Image 3: Current broken behaviour after the update (All non-ASCII text converted into blocks).

Steps to Reproduce:
- Download any English ASCII font (I am testing with BoldPixels https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/2d/fonts/boldpixels-font-332078).
- Open Font Asset Creator: In Unity, Window > TextMeshPro > Font Asset Creator.
- Configure;
• Select the downloaded font as the source font.
• Set the Character Set to ASCII.
• Click Generate Font Atlas and save the new font asset.
- Create a new TextMeshPro object via GameObject > UI > Text - TextMeshPro (VRC). (should spawn with a canvas, if not make one)
- Assign the newly created custom font asset to this text object.
- Type or paste non-ASCII characters (e.g., こんにちは) into the text field.
Reproduction World:
Here is a test world with 2 canvases, one set to BoldPixels and the other set to LiberationSans SDF https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_d5e463e3-0630-4b2f-86b1-a1c5c3539a4d/info

_tau_ Additional Observations
Looking at the broken rendering on the custom font canvas, the missing glyph blocks are not uniform, they vary in width depending on the character.
This suggests that TextMeshPro's layout engine is successfully looking up the fallback font sizes but something after that point fails.
