Positional audio malfunctioning
closed

New to the audio update of this week, there seem to be situations where the audio channels swap for other voices (left voices in right ear etc) permanently. Requires client restart to fix (so not a SteamVR reboot!). Have attempted loading into other worlds/avatars afterwards, bug remained.
Steps to reproduce (not entirely certain):
Loading into the following world, and after a certain amount of time/interactions the bug occurred: https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_d93d97b3-7e68-492d-b929-4c1fb26ccd9e
Update: Bug is also headset invariant, occurred on Index/Vive/Rift so far.

StormRel: it isn't happening to me anymore, but i have heard the occasional user complain about it, very rarely. I do know some headsets (og vive comes to mind) also get stereo swapped globally and not just in VRC, and I have no way of knowing if thats what those individuals are experiencing. The issue i had in 2020 is likely unrelated to any current ones.

StormRel: So the audio straight-up swapping ears isn't really a thing anymore, but positional audio DOES consistently break in larger worlds and has done so for YEARS. It'll sound like player voices are coming right at your left or right ear, rather than position correctly from the intended speaker.
This generally occurs about once a night for me if I'm hanging out in larger party worlds with music and people talking, and the best causes I've been able to determine are either a missing VRC audio source spatializer on a world's audio component breaks player audio somehow (I've had this happen in my own world without one, adding it has caused this to never happen since). Any large club world will do this with a high player cap and an active video player (Smashed is one that's consistently done it to me, Drinking Night will too sometimes if it's highly-populated)
The other best guess I've had is it's a memory or caching issue of some kind that causes the audio engine to start struggling, because it tends to fail on a single person more often than not (ie; you hear one or two specific players sounding like they're right in your ear or in the wrong place) with other player's voices coming from their actual location.

StormRel: I haven't had this issue in quite some time, so I'm assuming it's been fixed.

Whaddageek: Thanks for looking into this! Since this is a separate issue, I'd encourage you write up a canny report for this specifically. I'll be closing this one as it doesn't appear to be happening anymore.

Experienced this bug almost everytime i visited friends on vrc

I've experienced this bug very often in The Pug. and have since seen it occur to others in front of me; About 5 or so people in front of me teleported about 5 meters adjacent all at the same time. I thought this behavior odd, so upon further investigation, all 5 people reported to have lost positional audio sync. after telling them what I saw no one ever reported being teleported and two people told me they did not experience a teleportation. promptly their after all of them restarted their clients and/or disconnected.

This bug is still readily present. It can be consistently triggered in my world, The Whaddatoy Store,by having a large group of people in it (say ~8+) for longer than ten minutes or so with people interacting with things.

i get the same issue, but it is very frequent. happens in almost any world, and at any time. happens more often if there is a group of more than 3 people nearby. the bug gets worse the longer i am online. restarting the game fixes it, but only for a few minutes until it starts again. ive been playing VRC for a fairly long time but it only recently began, and got MUCH worse with the two latest updates as of sept. 12 2020 - it is NOT as simple as "reversed stereo" it can be more accurately described as 'incorrect position and rotation of audio source'. it can make players sound closer, farther away, or in a different direction than they are. in a group of 6 or more people it becomes a completely unplayable mess of audiosensory overload as voices originate from seemingly random locations around your head.
i have tried a variety of adjustments to audio devices, changing device completely, and completely reinstalling VRchat fresh. none of this had any impact.

I've noticed some different issues with positional audio too. For example, if you go to The Room of Rain map, put a video on the video player, and then stare at the wall with all the settings on it, you will only hear the video's audio playing in your left ear, and nothing on your right. Same thing if you faced the opposite way.

Someone was reporting this in The Pug last night. Seemed like it coulda been partially related to sitting in stations for her.
