Instance Join Failures, Regardless of Instance Population
tracked

This is an issue we've been experiencing in various RP instances.
Regardless of if a given instance is at or under soft cap - or below hard cap - random players will attempt to join an instance and then be sent off to a separate instance.
If we create a new instance, the issue no longer impacts those being afflicted with the issue above, but instead seemingly afflicts a random user attempting to enter the new instance.
When the issue happens, those effected see this in their output logs:
2021.09.22 22:36:03 Log - [Behaviour] Successfully joined room
2021.09.22 22:36:03 Log - [Behaviour] Spent 0.08389282s entering world.
2021.09.22 22:36:03 Log - [Behaviour] Waiting to enter network room
2021.09.22 22:36:04 Log - [Behaviour] OnConnected
2021.09.22 22:36:04 Log - [Behaviour] OnJoinRoomFailed
2021.09.22 22:36:04 Log - [Behaviour] Resetting game flow because "Failed to join room: ": [SkipLogin, TryAlternateInstance]
Again, this seems to happen regardless of a given instance's population size.

We are seeing this increasingly when using Linux, and there seems to be a slight correlation with the number of people in the instance you try to join to.
Some people reported clearing the cache fixes it.

I am also having the same issue now. If you have solved this problem, please let me know how.

We've been experiencing similar issues as well.
I don't know if this is relevant but we've noticed that players entering the instance using the same internet connection will be sent to a different instance after a seemingly random cap. For us this varied from around 5 to 10 players, with the world cap set at 20. Those using a different connection could connect to the instance no problem. This happened in both public and private instances.
I can provide logs if needed.

unironically, this gets super annoying. trying to join an instance and then vrchat sends you to a different one.

Reviewing this report. Please post any relevant information you might have. In particular, I need:
- Reproduction steps.Steps to cause this issue to happen on demand. Can I follow some sequence of events to trigger this behavior? If yes, tell me those events.
- Full logs and notations of when the incident occured, down to the minute. In particular, I need: date, time, timezone, userID of the person who experienced it, instance ID that you were trying to join. These are all included in the logs.
- The state of the instance (population, mostly) when attempting to join.
Please don't post incomplete or unverified information, it will make it harder for us to solve this issue!

Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: Unfortunately, we don't know what the trigger is to cause the issue, so I cannot provide repro steps. The issue, in my experience, has occurred in RP lobbies, typically before RP starts, when all users are gathering in the specific instance. To my knowledge, this doesn't happen in every single RP session, but it could be I am unaware of someone being affected.
When it does happen, the issue will affect those specific users all night for that instance, unless we make a new instance. However, when we make a new instance, this issue will then affect other users and the previously impacted users will be fine.
We had this issue happen to someone last night in a lobby and I requested their output log. Canny only allows uploading of images to post, so please let me know where you'd like me to send this log.
Last night particularly, we were initially over soft cap (40+, below 80), recreated the instance, and were running into the issue for a user while under the soft cap of 40.
Moving forward, we can request affected users to gather their logs, have someone check the instance population count at the time, and provide this information as well.

Does this happen randomly? Can you cause it to start happening?
Kareeda
Tupper - VRChat Head of Community: On the nights it has happened, it happens all night no matter how many instances we start but always to a different person. Other nights it happens to no one. We created instances for 2 hours straight and can get VODs of when it happened. Sadly those logs are gone now but if it happens again we can try to get those individuals to send logs in. This is also during Peak hours, on a Saturday. But went fine Monday. Both Nights we had a full 81 in Lobby (including map creator to get to 81). If it happens again it'll be reproduceable until it's not. If that makes sense.
