Game Crashes after a short period when playing via Steam Play
goofybud
As of the Unity 2019.4.30f1 update, VRChat has had an issue where it would occasionally begin to consume a large amount of VRAM and crash when played via Steam Play in SteamVR mode. This happens even at the login screen; and makes the game unplayable as it crashes every few minutes.
With 2019.4.31f1; it seems that this issue has gotten worse and happens more consistently. Prior, the game would sometimes to often function correctly.
Desktop mode is unaffected.

It seems that as of the latest Proton Experimental release from Valve, the problem may have been resolved.

An additional workaround, in place of removing the OVRLipSync DLL also appears to be using the AMDVLK Vulkan driver, instead of RADV. Launch Steam ensuring the AMD Switchable Graphics layer is set to AMDVLK, and then SteamVR and VRChat. It does cause some performance issues and stuttering, but these seem to be related to SteamVR and AMDVLK not playing nice together, however the game does stop leaking memory.

This behavior is still present on the Open Beta branch (Oct 8 2021)
It seems that, for some reason, removing the OVRLipSync DLL will correct this issue. It does break lip-sync, however the game stops leaking VRAM. Using an older version of Proton (such as 5.13) where the OVRLipSync DLL fails to load properly will also cause the game to run properly (minus lip-sync).

I can concur with a similiar problem, when I enter VRChat and then open up SteamVR menu to set some settings, my framerate drops to a locked 11FPS and gets progressively worse when trying to fix it, at the moment my only solution is fully restarting VR I run AMD chips as well (AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 Gb RAM, GeForce 2070 Super)

Further discussion with other users indicates that this may be specific to AMD hardware; and it is possible that NVidia is not effected.
