[1748]can not hear anyone's voice in steam open-beta version VRChat
needs more information
oooooohmygosh
I was using open beta version on Steam, and suddenly I couldn't hear any players' voice. I could still hear the world's music. I tried restart my PC and restart the game, but it still didn't work.

Hey everyone! We are looking for more info on this issue to provide a fix.
For that reason, we have enabled a custom debug beta on Steam. You can enable it with the password
audiotest1234
, the branch is called a-test
.EDIT: The branch has a new build now which should in theory fix the issue! Please report if you can hear voices now. If you still cannot, perform the steps below and drop your logs please!
Test instructions:
- Opt in to the a-testbranch and launch VRChat in Desktop mode.
- Visit this world: https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_26501c5c-ca19-47b0-aeca-8a8f69b519c7/info
- You can click the red spheres to turn them green, and they should all play audio.
- If you are affected by this bug, I suspect you will only hear one of them. Two will turn green, but remain silent. Make sure you have your World volume up.
- Close VRChat and submit your logs here! They may be large, so you can host them on pastebin, gist.github.com, or similar, and link them here. Here is a help page showing you where to find your logs: https://help.vrchat.com/hc/en-us/articles/9521522810899-Where-do-I-find-my-Output-Logs-and-Crash-Dumps
- Lastly don't forget to switch off of a-testagain.
Thanks in advance for your help! We really do want to fix this issue, but it is hard without a solid repro.

Note that due to the debug code the build on the branch may run slower than usual. If this is your only way to hear voices currently, you can still use it as usual however.

Dear _tau_,
You actually did it!! I have tested both current branch and a-test branch and although I cannot hear the audio sources b and c on the current branch, I can hear all three sources on the a-test branch!!! Thank you so so much for fixing this issue!!!
Here is the log from the current branch; I can only hear source a, I cannot hear source b and c.
Here is the log from the current a-test branch. I can hear all audio sources; a, b, and c.

I launched the desktop version with this debug beta, went into the home world, then went into the Japan region inbound instance I created myself, and did what was written. However, it didn't mean that the sound wasn't actually audible as written.
For the time being, I tried it in VR mode under the same conditions, and I was able to hear all the sounds just fine.
If you're doing something wrong, this information may not be useful, but I'll write it like this as my own result.
We will send both the desktop log and the VR log.
The earlier the date and time, the desktop version of the log.

I created myself and started the desktop version in this debug beta, then started the Japan region invited instance I created myself and started the actions However, I did not actually experience the issue where sound was not audible as audible.
Just to be sure, I thought the same conditions in VR mode, but again, all sounds played perfectly fine.
If I've mentioned any required actions taken, this information may be considered, but I'm reporting my results as they are.
I will send both the desktop logs and the VR logs.
The log with the mentioned date/time is for the desktop version.

Here's two output files on the a-test branch.
First file is in the "broken" state where I disabled one of the audio devices on my bluetooth headset
The second file is the working version where I can hear all three sources

Dev seems cannot be repro at the moment, so please give device info to here, so dev can check issue further.
Since reproduction is difficult, please include information on the device (mono, stereo, Bluetooth, wired/wireless, etc.) where the problem is occurring.

i have tried All 3 Version of the VRChat, Public, Public Beta, and 3rd Person Beta, but I got no audio in any of these. I have tried to wipe the cache, wipe the game, and a fresh install, but nothing seems to have worked so far. It started happening on 4th of December for me, when i opened the game there was an update and afterwards it doesn't work.

recent update as of dec. 3rd 2025 has broken audio
Iron_pancake
when the update this Wednesday was added, when i would load into lobbys, i would not be able to hear any audio coming from players. i could hear the games UI, i could hear sounds from the avatars, but i could not hear anyone speaking.
i troubleshooted with friends to make sure it wasn't my pc being an issue.
I let it rest to see if waiting would fix it but it hasnt.
at first we read some forums that my headset i was using might be the issue, but as of just recently testing it on desktop without vr, the problem has persisted.
i hope this gets fixed as soon as possible, as this renders playing this game socially, impossible.

Steam Audio Bug
Foxglover
Going into any world and player audio cannot be heard. World audio and menu sounds are unaffected. Happened for the first time today so assuming it was the new update. I can be heard so my microphone is working fine.
Things done to troubleshoot:
Restart VRchat
Restart Headset
Restart PC
Verify game file integrity
Confirm output device
Audio Drivers up to date
Uninstall and reinstall VRchat
Try on Virtual Desktop and Steam Link both affected the same
Desktop mode affected as well
