[1456] Asburd Memory Usage in Open Beta
tracked
MissingNO123
As of some time earlier this month, VRChat has been using a
ridiculous
amount of memory. On opening the client, its memory usage grows continuously until either the application is closed, or your whole system crashes. Hiding all avatars does not prevent it from happening, and switching safety to hide all after noticing the high memory usage doesn't cause memory usage to decrease anymore. Changing worlds doesn't decrease memory usage anymore. This happens in any world, while wearing any avatar, in Desktop and PCVR mode. The same problem is also happening on Linux through Proton.Attached are screenshots of VRChat's memory usage charts in Process Explorer and Task Manager, the total system commit graph shortly after a crash, VRChat eating up more memory than Unity on Windows, and VRChat eating up more memory than Unity on Xubuntu.

Horrible performance after update

A few days after the 2024.2.2 update, overall performance dropped drastically. It is hard to pinpoint, but after the update, performance has major spikes in VR mode during these cases:
-Facing towards mirrors
-Facing towards media players
-Having more than 2 or 3 players in the instance
It also happens with playtime itself. The game becomes unplayable after just a couple of world loads. Which leads to the suspicion of all this being caused by a memory leak from the update. I am an AMD user, so maybe the update broke things further for me instead of fixing them as stated in the update notes.
Already did a clean reinstallation of VRC. Same problems persist.

New update: Tried playing via the beta branch. Issues are still present, but at a less rate and intensity, so the game is actually kinda playable like it was before the update. Had a good night of going from busy world to busy world, the game only starting to stutter and lock up by the end of it, so I will delete the game cache before next time I play to make sure it isnt that.

And another update: In Desktop mode, game is in the 50-60 fps range in optimized worlds (the one I have as my home is Ramu's Gun Range, where I am testing this). It does take a dip down to 30 in VR mode but stays stable. However, player presence still messes up the performance. I know for a fact now that avatars don't matter, as the slowdowns and delays occur no matter where I am looking. Game is perfectly fine in the desktop window but delayed in the headset, so maybe its an encoder issue?

Another update: 4 gigs VRAM now and turns out Steamlink works now. While ALVR might have seemed to contribute to the performance dips, the issues are still persistent when playing through Steamlink, just now with delayed actions instead of freezing. Seems like the presence of players in general regardless of world or avatar also causes the spikes. Something that, again, was not an issue before this update.

My specs are 7800X3D, 7900XTX, 64GB RAM, I'm getting way lower FPS in all, but the most optimized worlds, even while alone. I use an excellent avatar.
I noticed the lag when it was still a beta, so I reverted to stable and the lag was gone. After 2024.2.2 release, the lag is back.

Important correction: Hiding
all
avatars has the effect of "freezing" VRChat's memory usage at its current value, hiding all but friends
will eventually fill all of your RAM followed by pagefile as your friends join and leave the instance, or as you go around visiting friends. Either way, memory never gets cleared for some reason.M

Specs: AMD Ryzen 3 3200U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx. 20 GB (17.9 usable) RAM, 2 GB VRAM. Game has been running perfectly fine in VR mode up until this point. Already looking to seeing if theres a way to assign higher VRAM for the card to use.
