[1375] Desire for pre-1375 mic icon fade behaviour
complete
techanon
Sorry for the spacebar heater moment, but I used the visibility of the mic icon to know when my mic is actually triggering the in game audio (yes even with my Beyond headset). There are times when I mute my audio input outside of the game for certain reasons and the in-game mute doesn't know this, so with the fade out enabled for only mute, when I'm not mute there is no immediate feedback that my audio is successfully being transmitted.
I would recommend making the mic fade behavior a value cycle (the enum/state control thing used on other settings) and provide different mic visibility options in there.
Maybe separate the visibility options of the Mute vs Talk icons? Not sure if that'd be too much granularity.
I'd like the option to have the mic icon fade out but still show up regardless of mute state.

Thank you all for your feedback!
The new fading behaviour is now an option, and the default has been returned to what it was. We still recommend switching to it if you are using an OLED headset and are concerned about burn-in.
We are also working on further mitigation strategies for burn-in.

[1381] 'Fading Mic' never shows up again

Enable fading mic icon setting
Icon fades immidiately and does not show back up when speaking, only shows up when toggling mute.

As someone with a Bigscreen Beyond I really dislike the mic icon fade behavior change. It doesn't really make any sense to me to only have the mic icon show up when you're talking while muted. That... doesn't really help me at all. I want to know when my mic is being picked up while unmuted. Would love for a new option to bring the pre-1375 mic icon behavior back or just a straight up revert.

Sounds like this which was pushed to live a few days ago? https://feedback.vrchat.com/bug-reports/p/1375-desire-for-pre-1375-mic-icon-fade-behaviour

While I agree that you are trying to find a solution for screen burn-in issues, this change negatively impact people without that issue. First of all, this should be an opt-in feature and not an opt-out unless everyone agrees with the new mic behavior

While I understand the reason for voice activity to fade up the icon during mute, this change of mic icon behaviour has made me mute/unmute far more than I used to so I can actually even tell if my mic is on or off. At the very least the option should be there to revert back to the previous behaviour if people choose to do so. I absolutely hated this change and every single person I spoke to about it hates it too. Hell I was so annoyed by it that I felt I had to provide feedback here for the first time in all my years on VRC.
Even an inversion of the current behaviour would make more logical sense; when mute you don't need to see the icon light up but when unmuted you should. From a safety point of view surely we deserve to know if our voice is actually being transmitted? If these changes are in aid of preventing screen burn-in, why not make that a separate sub-setting for people to choose between? Not everyone has a Bigscreen Beyond.

Allow mic icon fade in while talking

in 2023.4.1p2 mic fade in was removed and only exists when mic is muted. This was done to prevent burn in on OLED displays. But I personally depended on the fade in to quickly determine if my mic was working without opening my quick menu. For the majority of users without OLED displays, give more granular options for users for when the mic icon should fade in or out.

Immediately had the awkward 'mute yourself' moment when dancing and not being aware mic active...

I keep my mic muted most of the time and only unmute for a short while when I have something to say. I really only care to know when my mic is unmuted so I don't make stupid sounds. And I don't want to look at a muted mic icon all the time. For me the current change is the worst so far. I'm heavily considering making an avatar based mic indicator for myself
