Group banners are always downloaded in their original size (thousands of pixels in a single dimension) even tho they are displayed in small element of like 350 pixels. Some of the friend thumbnails in the right wing too.
E.g. when I open https://vrchat.com/home/groups I download 170 MBs of data which is INSANE for a web page displaying text and thumbnails. The website downloads all group banners in full res. These images can be GIGANTIC.
This is awful for the user and your servers/bandwidth. It can kill your mobile data limits.

Wonder if in-game banners are not compressed as well. This would imply extra couple of MBs per person in an instance

After the latest update to the website, the issue also affects the user profile page. Visiting profile pages of a few users can now easily consume hundreds of MBs.
I visited 3 different user profiles and there are results (counter was cleared before every visit):

I am not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but yesterday I was experiencing extremely slow operation in certain parts of the Community Labs in the World Menu.
The world that is a suspect in causing this has already been removed, but it is possible that this event was observed the other day and has become a security hole of sorts used by trolls.

I think the images aren't compressed at all and some people use 2k resolution or even more for vrc+ profile pictures. Also VRCX (third party program for managing friendships in VRChat) allows you upload quite high resolution thumbnails for avatars as well. VRChat could implement server sided compression like most websites do where users have custom avatars for their profiles. If I recall correctly steam avatar sizes for use in game come only in 32, 64 etc, in a web browser max size is 128x128.
