Recently, the recorded visitor counts for worlds have started rising much quicker than they used to. I suspect there was a shift somewhere around June 16th.

To give an example, a third-party website reported the following visitor numbers for The Black Cat before and after this date:

06.06. - 13.06.

I have observed a similar spike of reported visitor numbers for my own world, yet the average number of people in instances remained the same during both time periods.

This makes me believe that something about the counting of visitors has changed.
