[1546] Remove the ban on untrusted URLs in public instances
StackOverflow
Watching videos has been a common activity in VRChat for many players, including those who are used to staying in public instances. After discussing with VRChat players around me, we found ourselves confused by the sudden ban on untrusted URLs, even when it is allowed in the setting menu. You may not be aware that video links from video websites like Bilibili (which is the most watched video platform in our country) cannot be directly resolved by the built-in video player, and watching videos there requires manually resolving it with external websites and resulting in an untrusted URL.
I understand that custom whitelist and no bans on private instances is a workaround for this problem, however:
- we don't expect world creators from worldwide to build a comprehensive list of URLs for this purpose, especially when they are not bothered by the ban themselves.
- we can move to private instances, but public instances are still a very important platform for free communication and in some sense a core experience in this game.
For the above reasons, I hope you can reconsider the ban on the untrusted URLs in public instances, for example, rollback the change, or get a more fine-grained option to allow those URLs in all instances. Otherwise, I hope to hear from you about a real solid reason for the ban, being more specific on the vulnerabilities playing those videos may trigger.
Removing useful functions should not be the primary option for security reasons. I write this post in hope that getting more discussion on this matter will come up with better solution to it so that more users are satisfied. Thank you for your understanding.

YAAA Absolutely bring it back Everyone should decide for themselves to allow Untrusted URLS using the already existing Untrusted URLS function... Always these paternalizations of what you can see and what not totally regardless of whether public or not... it annoys.. So many VRC DJ's have stopped because they run their DJ streams via their own servers, which only works in Group+, etc. It is impossible to become better known apart from friends. Thank you..
When I see how many people don't need/want the Untrusted URL's geforcet to be switched off in public's and are still stubbornly held against it, I find terrifying. Let's start a petition ^^
Would you also like to integrate VRChat to use my login cookies from YouTube/Google? Every time I get URLs on YouTube, I only get: “VideoError: [youtube] xxxxxxxxxx: Sign in to confirm you're not a bot. Use --cookies-from-browser or --cookies for authentication. See #how -do-i-pass-cookies-to-yt-dlp for how to manually pass cookies. Also see #exporting YouTube cookies for tips on effectively exporting YouTube cookies”
What doesn't work with the included yt-dlp. I replace it so that no videos work in public at all, regardless of whether YouTube or not..
In private lobbies but apparently already? Without a --cookies-from-browser, YouTube does not work in public and private instances, as soon as you are considered a bot on YouTube because you can't log in, there is no workarround apart from the minimalistic detour which only causes problems.

I won't be renewing my VRC+ sub until this is reversed. Such an option should be in the hands of the end user, not forced in this way. There's perfectly legitimate sources of safe and legitimate/legal media on the internet that are not part of the listed 'whitelist' which can never be exhaustive. The 'Untrusted URL's' option is meaningless now.
AwesomeFart
atleast allow them in group publics... there are mods and player can be locked if moderator desires so...
Normal publics are another topic...

TLDR; Put that option in the players hand instead, additionally next to "allow untrusted URLs".
Edit: I almost forgot, If I as a world creator would want to limit what URLs you can use within my world, then I can do so with a bit of C# code myself already.

I am a depression sufferer, and my daily cure is to sing in VRCHAT using BILIBILI videos. But now I can't do that anymore, and I feel very sad. Please help me.
