[1236] Method to disable pickup interaction
tracked

Since 2017 I've been waiting for a method to disable pickup interactions. Always thought it was a mild oversight that would be rectified in the next big menu update. Yet it doesn't seem to have been added in this one.
Request: Slider to adjust the opacity of the pickup interactions (outline, dashed line). And a method to disable the vibration.
Why?: The ability to adjust HUD elements is awesome. Being able to disable specific parts of the HUD or disable the HUD entirely is a good thing. I personally play with my HUD off and nameplates off. I find it more immersive. But nothing rips me out of that immersion more than seeing all these blue pickup interactions in my face constantly. It's obnoxious especially when there are multiple pickups all right next to each other. Disabling the HUD should disable the HUD. Not leave elements that can't be disabled no matter what, especially when they're as intrusive as the pickup interactions.
Watching the new video regarding the main menu I got the feeling they want to give users more control. So this oversight seems even more silly.
Summary: please add a method to disable pickup interactions so we can finally turn off the entire HUD should we choose to. Thanks.

Dashed lines can be disabled in OpenBeta 1501, and finally only outlines are left.

Hopefully we'll be able to disable it entirely soon. They were so close.... But fell just short of perfection.

I would also like to add a +1 to this! In my case with the AudioLink controller, there is currently no way to hide "Release to Drop" when holding. When you hold the AudioLink controller with left hand in VR, "Release to Drop" draws overtop of the controller UI, creating a bit of an eyesore. It would be super awesome if there was a way to change/modify/disable this tooltip text on the VRC Pickup component in Unity.

If not a slider, add something like a button toggle to the action menu tools to disable triggers in the meantime

This is an interesting idea. While it's not something we currently have on our roadmap, we'd like to add a slider for something like this. It just might have to wait until some other high priority tasks are knocked out first!

Strasz - Community Team: sweet. Maybe in a few years we'll be able to actually turn off the hud. Thought it would have been pretty trivial to add and people clearly want to be able to actually turn off this obnoxious and immersion breaking stuff. Shame.

M E R C: I saw someone have an avatar interaction where I can pick up their avatar prop. It felt natural. No HUD, no controller overlay. Just your avatar and the prop; pure bliss.

The dotted lines are extremely distracting, a faint outline is more than enough.

GenesisAria: The dotted lines help me know which hand it is that is selecting an object, in other games I have had issues when laying down sometimes, I would end up trying to pick up an object, but it's highlighted by my left hand by chance when trying to grab it with my right.
I think to combat this, users should be able to change the color of the outline depending on which hand is able to grab the object in question.
say a dark purple for left, and a soft pink for right, something like that.
This way you can get rid of the dotted lines, but still maintain which hand is able to grab.

There is a way to disable the haptic vibrations in the beta. I've turned it on myself. But the other stuff you said is still very true.
Granted it is at the very bottom of the now long list of the quick menu settings, so I don't blame you in the slightest for now finding it yet.

Also wanted to add that they are adding a lot, so oversights or a given. But as long as we keep on saying what we all want and the keep up with the great work VRchat will be for the better and so will its community.

FriendlyGaymer: good to know about the vibration. I just hope we'll be able to turn it all off soon.
The interaction graphical elements are just a bit overkill. I personally don't need a blue outline, transparent blue fill, and a dashed line rendering over everything to know I can pickup a mug. A mod used to exist that changed it to just a outline and nothing else and that alone was much better but being able to turn it off would be amazing.
Same goes for stations I guess but I didn't elaborate on that directly.
With the addition of options to disable the hud or enable an "immersive" mode, I'd expect all these graphical elements to get hidden even if they aren't necessarily hud elements. Anything that renders over world elements and is part of my vision id expect to be able to disable. I'm not Master Chief. I'm a 3 foot tall bunny. I don't need AI vision. Especially not after 20k hours.
I felt like this was just an opportune moment to bring this up and I'm sure it will eventually be addressed but this seemed like the best opportunity to do so. Fingers crossed!

M E R C: Personally, I'd like to remove the line, reduce the outlining to something thinner and more opaque. So I think if they add this more options may be better than a mode as if you and me may want different things, I can only imagine all of the other preferences everyone has.
I feel like if this was family guy there'd be a cut away right now, but I don't have the budget for that kind of thing :/

Not sure if your request includes disabling chairs, but that would also be nice. Can't tell you the number of times I've accidentally sat in a chair by accident

DAG-XR
There should be a gesture to quickly toggle pickup interactions. Would be neat to do so if you grabbed three times with both controllers simultaneously. (One-handed mode? I dunno.)

M E R C
DAG-XR: something like that would be cool. I'm mainly talking about the UI for interactions but I do highly agree there should be a method for turning pickup off entirely as well. A simple toggle in the action menu for that would be nice but at this point I'd probably accept anything lol.
