[Feature Request] Ability to choose an impostor, for every avatar
AstraeaZero
Hello, wouldn't it be a better solution to add an additional tab in avatars with already generated impostors, instead of generating them for a specific avatar?
In my case there are a few specific reasons:
- I often don't update my avatar, I just upload it as a separate version, because when I mess something up, I always know that I can use different avatars, there are also people who don't create master avatars, only a few specific variants with a few clothes, if creating an impostor will be took as much time in the future as it does now, creating a dozen or so impostors will simply be terribly time-consuming to generate for each separate version.
- After a wave of problems with avatar rippers, of which I was a victim, I know that rippers are still able to extract avatars straight from the vrchat cache, and this causes me to use an avatar protected with DexProtect so that the situation that affected me would not occur. it never happened again, unfortunately, it will not be possible to create an impostor from such a secured avatar, which means that this function is still useless for me, and I must admit that I previously tried to create my avatar in the Quest version, but with poor results, because the requirements for the quest are too restrictive, and the level of advancement of my avatar is simply beyond the ability to create one that looks good and has any good performance to be visible to others.
- I think that not everyone wants to be visible to others in the same way, but simply to be visible differently than a robot, but they also like to change avatars often, including public ones, which makes the use of impostors also useless, because we are not able to able to generate impostors for public avatars, and even if the author of a given avatar had such an opportunity, imagine how many avatars would have to undergo such a transformation, where in fact many authors, after completing a public avatar, usually do not return to it.
I think these are three strong arguments for simply adding the option of choosing an impostor yourself, instead of generating it for each specific avatar separately, because I must admit that I really like your new idea, it finally solves the problem of the lack of Quest avatars, but it requires slight refinement so that everyone is satisfied.
I would also like to know what other people think about this idea?

i think basically you're asking to pick an imposter created from one of your avatars and use it as a fallback - i would also like to do that, i dont want to mess up my "recently updated" list anymore than i already have to generate imposters and still not have to make a bunch of quest side avatars etc etc. many good reasons why picking a single imposter for fallback use would be a good feature

To counter your last point, if I remember correctly having to manually put impostors in the queue is more of an open beta thing, and they plan to eventually queue avatars, so public avatars that the creator won't go back and touch will eventually have impostors generated.
For avatars with protection systems, it might be worth checking if uploading the avatar without the protection system, generating the impostor, and then updating the avatar to add the protection system would invalidate the generated impostors. However, even if it didn't, there could be issues in the future if VRChat re-queued avatars for impostorization upon update, unless we had word from VRChat that it wouldn't.
Depending on what exactly the restrictions you are running into with the quest version of your avatar, it might be worth revisiting creating a native quest version. (for example, if your base has a quest version that is barely under the polygon limit you care about, you could paint a single set of clothing directly onto the avatar instead of using geometry for it. or remove unseen geometry for that single set. this could be very similar to what you're presenting with your impostor, since no toggles work on an impostor.)
