With the new cloning feature: Allow avatar creators to set a “pedestal only” option so that avatars can still be used as quest rewards or Easter eggs for special avatars in worlds, for example.
Still wouldn't fix the fact people can use programs like VRCX to access and download these avatars anyways.
We'd like to do this, and definitely understand why this is a popular request. We can't promise a timeframe at the moment, but it is definitely on our list.
@Tupper - Community Manager: When will this feature be in? I am sick of people just grabbing my Public Avatars with things like AvatarFavMod, while I dont wanna share them with everyone, they are set to public so they work on pedestals on my world. And people can just run around look for my Account Name and grab all my Public Avatars with that Mod.
@Raphfilia: mods/programs like that would still be able to grab them. Pedestal only would still mean it has a public status which therefore means that programs would be able to access the ID and clone/download it.
How is this not yet at least at the "planned" stage? There are less popular "In Progress" items. Dont have feature voting if votes dont matter.
@Peter Kufs: Agreed. it seems as if they're focusing too much on simple stuff at the moment as opposed to taking on some of the larger, more sought after requests.
@Peter Kufs: I agree. It is concerning. Its a seriously important part of vrchat and as it is atm, it completely breaks some security features that were implemented in the past, surely they'd be aware of that atleast...
@Peter Kufs: Just because a lot of people want it doesn't mean it's a good idea.
If they implemented this, as others have mentioned, many world authors would choose to make all of their avatars uncloneable. This, combined with private avatars and people turning cloning off (which by the way is an option for you if you don't want people to steal your reward), would mean that you would almost never click on someone and have an active clone button, which would completely negate the point of the feature.
Already 50% of those I click on have cloning disabled, even when they're using public avatars. And as an avatar author myself who wants people to share my work far and wide, this pisses me off a little, because I didn't make those avatars so you could selfishly keep them to yourself.
On the other hand, having said this, I can see how respecting the wishes of the creator might be the best option... But only if the ability to clone is decided by by the creator, not by the user. In other words, if they implement this feature, they should also remove the ability for users to disable cloning themselves. This way if you have a public avatar which has cloning enabled, you can't circumvent the creator's wishes and keep it to yourself. And you also can't allow people to clone it if the creator didn't want it to be cloneable. And if you don't like that, then you're always free to create or commission and upload your own avatars that others can't clone. This would probably also have the benefit of making more avatars cloneable because rather than throwing up yet another roadblock, you get rid of one big one (user disabled cloning), and create another one (creator disabled cloning), but the new one you've created will result in that author's work not being shared as widely, which would be a disincentive for them to disable cloning in the first place.
@Raccoonteur: You seem to miss the point. Most creators concerns are that their world Just become irrelevant when their Avatar is cloned all over. And most creators dont like haveing their avatars shared that way.
The Argument of removeing the Clone Off Button would prevent freinds shareing their avatrs with freinds only. If you want a Public Avatar and cloneing is Off you can go on creator Info right now and See the world the authot made and get the Avatar that way. If the Avatar author doenst have a world he probably doesnt want that Avatar widely shared. And yes it is 100% the authors choice how to handle their Avatars. If they wnat it cloneable let it be Public If they only want a selected few to have them / let it be a reward let them turn on pedestals only. Simple as that. The friend I talked Most to about this is a world and Avatar creatot and Im Just an Avatar creator and we say in the current state it sucks to have the Avatar cloneing without the pedestals only.
@Crazy Absol: I didn't miss the point. I understand world creators want their rewards to require some effort to obtain. And I agree having avatars as a reward is a good thing.
I'm just concerned many avatar creators would force people to go to their worlds to grab avatars that aren't rewards. Cloning improved the game a great deal. Just last night I showed off a fun avatar I got off someone else, and all my friends cloned it, and we all had a good laugh at the chaos that ensued. Without cloning, that could never have happened. And the more barriers you put in place to cloning, the less likely that kind of spontaneous comedy can happen.
"The Argument of removeing the Clone Off Button would prevent freinds shareing their avatrs with freinds only."
This is true and a problem, but I still feel it should be the creator's wishes regarding cloning, not the wishes of those that want to keep it for themselves and their friends, which are followed.
A simple solution here would be to allow the creator to check a box on upload to allow cloning between friends only.
Or... and this is probably a better solution... if you upload an avatar, only you can temporarily enable cloning from the menu on a an avatar which you have set to disable cloning. So you could turn it on temporarily, allow your friend to clone it, but then your friend could not then pass it along to anyone else, again, preserving the wishes of the creator.
But as far as those who simply grabbed public avatars from worlds being able to disable cloning on them, I still don't think that's a good thing. Those people are just being selfish with something the creator wanted to be shared far and wide. Keep control of cloning in the hands of the creators!
It ruins the point of having those pedestals at the end of maps, the real reward is blah blah friends, but really when WE FRIENDS get to the end of something special thats it, we get to be the end avatar... Everyone in pubs can copy us and then what privite it so that people that don't or won't finish the map that people have finished? They just go to a pub and right click? Thanks VRC Devs for the waste of time to find hidden shit when I can get it in a normal pug.
Yes!!! I want people to come to my work as well as have some unique avatars that aren’t as easy to get as well...
for creator (author): share an avatar public, with an individual or a specific group of people (friends, vips, group members) and on player side the rights for the next person to clone/not clone should be inherited from the permissions the author (creator) has set: clone everyone, clone noone - rather than being set by the next person.
@Pixeldoll: I agree with this. simply allow the content creator to set permissions. Probably the most simple solution.
My suggest for new avatar permissions are
On player side, if avatar allows:
* Allow everyone clone
* Allow friends only clone
* Allow clone on request
* No cloning
And on avatar author side
avatar is for:
* Public usage
* Friends only
* Whitelisted players only (whitelist per avatar)
* Private usage
and if not private avatar:
* Is avatar clonable or pedestal only
If they add this, the Cloning feature will be useless because almost all major world creators will set their avatars to pedestal only and we would still have to go to their ultra laggy world with a video player and always on mirror and probably crash to get those avatars. It doesn't really change anything.
I also have worlds with secret avatars and I personally don't mind if anyone comes and takes them with cloning enabled. All of my main avatars are public as well.
I'm not personally a content creator, but I know a lot of friends who do create a ton of content they like to hide behind puzzles and games, in worlds they put a lot of effort into, who are absolutely devastated by the cloning function. They want people to explore their worlds and feel like the avatar they're using is special, but with the cloning feature nobody needs to visit the worlds at all.
As it is, they've set most of their avatars to private to avoid the cloning, but they hate this. There should be a middle ground where you can set public avatars to be unclonable.
